The hubby and I are beginning to plan our first cruise ever. We wanted to see if you guys can recommend what you think the best cruise line is for people in wheelchairs? Do you have any other advice for taking a cruise? Also, we are looking at getting him a customized electric wheelchair to make travel easier...does anyone have any advice on how to get started with that? And how can we get some beach tires to put on for when he wants to go on the beach? Thanks for the help!!!

saradise,

you should check the archieves. if you type in the word cruise will find 2 pages of posts concerning this subject.

also what type of insurance do you have? the first steps in getting medical equipment is a script from your doctor. once he writes you a script for an electric w-c and knobby tires you submit it to your insurance carrier.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Hi,

The last cruise we took was before spinal injury. In our time we have used both Royal Caribbean and P&O. Both of these provide excellent facilities. The decks all have lift access, and from memory, thresholds are reasonable. I am sure that boarding could done via a ramp to the lowest deck.

Outings could be a problem, as coaches do not always provide facilities for wheelchairs, and some day visits for shallow water, involve using one of the motorised lifeboats. I'm sure the crew would overcome that however.

hi norma,

at the top of the page is a white box that has the word search in it. what you do is type in cruises and hit search and you will get 35 matches. this works for any subject you want info on. the archieves are an invaluable way to gain info.

good luck,

Hi, I have just come back from a cruise around Spain on the Celebrity Eclipse and it was superb. The facilities were great, the staff could not be more helpful, all the ports were accessible (some better than others). Some places had local buses with ramps or adapted taxis. The open top buses are quite a good way of getting to see the sights in the cities albeit you obviously need to stay downstairs! I had a disabled suite which had a great wetroom, ample space to move around with the chair, room under bed for hoist, accessible balcony. They provide assistance in the buffet restaurants to serve your food and will carry give assistance off and on to the ship. I would recommend it in a heartbeat! It is not cheap but worth every penny. Last year I went on the NCL Jade which again, had very good facilities but the ship was not as nice. I have just booked Royal Carribean, Independence of the Seas for next year. As we sailed from Southampton there were no flights involved so no luggage restrictions; I took a portable hoist, shower chair, Balder electric chair and manual wheelchair along with 2 large suitcases. Go for it, I will never look back.
