It has been a while since i have visited this forum. Recently i have had a huge increase in pain, and have experienced new pain I have not had before. I am almost at 5 years since my accident, stopped prescription pain meds 2 months after my accident and never really had much pain. Over the last 2 months I have had an excruciating amount of pain. So much so that it has left me in the fetal position in bed all day on several occasions. Left me sleepless on many nights, and has caused me to be so nauseous I have lost an unhealthy amount of weight because sometimes I just cant eat because of the pain. My physical therapist and primary Dr both believe it is most likely muscle related, saying my muscles below my injury level are being over worked and are over compensating for my 4 fused vertebrae. Still waiting to see a Neurosurgeon to make sure it isnt bone or hardware related.

Has anybody else had a sudden onset of pain like this? Especially after years of being virtually pain free?

Yep, turned out it was disc trouble below my injury level.

I was a massage therapist for many years. Muscles, muscles, muscles. I have never seen nor heard of muscle pain manifesting as you describe. I would see a neurologist.

This happened to me as well. I am also 5 yrs post, however; my pain is in my abdomen. Cat scans show nothing is wrong. My Dr. is convinced its either phantom pain, which it is not, or some type of nerve pain. He refered me to a neourlogist... I guess thats the way to go.

Thank you for your replies. Took a Cat Scan last week...with and with out contrast (I hate that stuff) and I will see a neurosurgeon tomorrow for results. I agree that it cant all be muscle. At times I can feel swelling in my lower back, especially when laying flat on my back. It has been hard to describe everything I am experiencing cause it is so random. The pain fluctuates so much.

I'm in a similar situation. Tho I've had a small amount of pain from the start,, it has increased to the point that I'm considering either some form of surgery or starting opiates,,, both of which I am loath to do.

I'm starting with a new pain specialist,, had the MRI,,, with and without,,, he even tried another intercostal injection, thinking( I suppose) that the first doctor didn't do it right. Same as the first guy,,, no help. The problem with these guys is that you can only get appointments 6 or 7 weeks out. That's a lot of time to hurt, in between. I'm seriously thinking about acupuncture,, and that's saying something, as I rank it somewhere out there with mind reading and honest polititians.

I'll mention the idea of disc problems below the injury site, to this new guy. Who knows,, couldn't hurt,,, any worse.

My original surgeon (who I wasnt very fond of) was booked for almost 2 months so I am seeing a new guy who could see me right away.
