Like many people here, I am a member of several forums. On one of the others forums, a SCI Nurse posted this paragraph and it is very descriptive of what our life is like.

The neurologic damage to the spinal cord causes multiple problems that are not going to go away until we get a cure. This includes neurogenic bowel and bladder, autonomic dysfunction (AD, thermoregulation problems, problems with blood pressure regulation), sexual dysfunction, as well as of course paralysis and loss of sensation. Add to that the known risks for diabetes, hyperlipidemia and heart disease that occur in people with SCI. Add to that neuropathic pain, over-use syndromes that effect primarily shoulder, wrist, elbow and hand joints, tendons and muscles, risks for pressure ulcers and long term effects of these, much less the psychological effects of SCI.

Have a good day!

Millard

Living these problems are too different from reading these issues. When having SCI, we are not able to escape these problems. We only decide whether to be a fighter, a challenger or not.

Hyperlipidemia is the medical term for high levels of lipids in the blood. Just a fancy way of saying "high cholesterol".

Well said by you, mahmutkaplan!

She should have delved deeper into the bowel and bladder nightmares: like those d@mn recurring UTI's and the "bowel program" and all its recurring nightmares like "accidents" and missing days...oh so much fun...well, and she could have delved deeper into everything else...oh nevermind, she did a nice synopsis...

I would still rather just NOT WALK and have all that other stuff removed, if ever given a choice between the two...

Yeah but why are we at greater risk of these things?
These sound like the symptoms of someone who sits around on there arse all day and doesn't do........
