Months ago, Gooserider developed an egg-sized lump on his buttock. It was later attributed to necrotic fat. It is not on a sitting surface. We think he may have injured himself sitting on the seatbelt of his wheelchair. On the lump, he got a skin sore, and we are treating that with guidance from a wound center.

They have arranged for him to sleep on an air mattress overlay, that changes where is hard and soft. It is supposed to be better for offloading the pressure sore, but makes transfers more difficult because the bed surface is higher and not stable.

His buttocks are changing shape in an extreme way. What used to stick out now sticks in.

He now is reporting pain in a new place, on the edge of the hip bone inside the buttock. We think this is the ischial tuberosity. There is nothing to see on the skin yet, not even a warm spot.

We have left a message asking a nurse at the Wound Center for advice, but they have not called back yet, His weekly appointment there is tomorrow.

He reports having to multi-stage many of his transfers, so he ends up sitting on the wheel or the edge of the chair seat, momentarily.

It is much better to respond to pressure problems early, but we are not sure what to do yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mary-Anne

mary-anne,

maybe he should use a sliding board in his transfer so he doesn't have to rest on the wheel. i hope it goes well at the dr. tomorrow.

What in the world is he doing transferring on his chair's wheel when his skin is as compromised as you have said in the past posts. Get a small transfer board. You will find that transfers are so much more easier. There are wide ones, short ones etc... I have a short plastic one I got online for $30 and it's flexible and works great.

He's going to end up tearing something and also compromising any sores he already has if he keeps transferring like that. Go on YouTube and watch some of those guys transfer for tips.
