Hi, Im writing for my son who has just been in an auto accident and is now a Quadriplegic. We are still in the hospital they are currently weaning him off his ventilator. But the question is: Where to you go to get financial help when you do not have any income to speak for Rehab. People have been telling me there are grants out there to get him places but i can not seem to find any. Does anyone have any information on this? Any help would be great. Thanks Shaun's Mom.

Hi shaun's momma!! First big hugs for you and shaun. I can't imagine having one my kids in our position. How your heart must be taking this I hope to never have to learn. Will be praying for bothyou and shaun!!

As to the help, get with the social worker in the hospital in the morning. She/he will be your goto point for all these things. She can get emergency medical coverage with your state in most cases pretty short order. How old is he by the way??

Shaun will need to get on social security disability, obviously. And he will need the state to help with his needs financially IE: medical costs. Also need to be in contact with the auto insurance carrier he had. Make sure any funds due him there are taken care of. Did he have health insurance prior to being in the wreck?? If so can call them find out how long he will be covered and if you have to go to cobra (pay the premium yourself) and if so how to set that up for now.

Long term disability?? did he have this at work?? Call and find out. If he did they will begin payment pretty quickly. Like weeks where as Social security usually takes 3 months or more. So exhaust that avenue as well.

Anyways, get with the social worker. She will take you by the hand on this journey.........after all they want their money at the hospital there too!!

Thankyou for your information the hosptial has stepped in and helped us get him on the road to SSI I .didnt know where to begin so im thankful for that. Shaun is 28 and just had started a new job and did not have any insurance at all. And the car only had liability so they are only going to pay about 5000.00 for medical expences so this is pretty overwhelming for all of us, im trying to keep it together but its tough never thought i would be going through this with my son. Thank you for the help i will be looking into the social worker information.

Hi Shauns mom...I am Greggs mom...looks like we are in the same boat. Gregg just turned 30, and is in NIACH right now...getting ready to go to St.Lukes in Spokane. I'd really like to chat with you.

Crashcarson suggestions are great. Another item to consider is whether the hospital has a foundation. Because it takes time for medicare and SSD to kick in, you will need some assistance in the meantime. Check with the Social Worker to see if there is a foundation affiliated with the hospital. They are usually willing to help out. Another thing to consider once you are in a Rehab hospital is to get with charities associated. They can help out with getting your home ready with equipment and supplies. I know this time is overwhelming so try and stay calm as that is the best support you can give your son right now.

Thankyou for the information it is overwhelming right now without a doubt, he is still in the hospital getting his respritory working properly, so i know its going to be a little bit before we can get to rehab. I will check with the social worker unfortunatly Idaho is limited on ideas for things like this but hopefully i will find some somewhere. Thanks again for the information.
