Hi guys,

So looks like I'll be taking a trip out to Sedona, Arizona around mid-Oct and we'll be driving from San Diego and camping! Just wondering if anyone has been and can recommend good campgrounds/spots to camp, things we MUST see, and any other tips you can think of. I've never been to Sedona but am very excited to check it out and camp there!

Ms. Twisted,

I've got a few stories about Sedona at www.AccessingArizona.com. There's some very cool drives in and out of Sedona as well.

Sedona is absolutely gorgeous, lots of meandering mountain roads, pines and red rocks and unigue places to shop. Take loads of pictures and eat the roasted green chilis and pinon nuts galore. You won't want to leave:)

My wife and I have visited Sedona twice and have very happy memories, however we don't do camping and we stayed in one of the chalets up near the airport. The airport is up a steep road from the town and one of the amazing views is the sunset on the red rocks all around, best seen from this road on the way down from the airport just before sunset.

There are also a number of companies doing jeep tours around the rugged terrain but I warn you they are bumpy. I had my strong back brace on and was stapped in well and I was fine and very impressed, but your mileage may vary; remember I had polio and am not a SCI. We were lucky in that we went on the jeep tour in January and it was fairly quiet with only the two of us in a Six? seater jeep.

We rented an aircraft from the airport (I'm a pilot) and flew over to Meteor Crater and Cannon Diablo - (my wife is into geology). We also visited Meteor Crater by road, but very difficult to travel around the rim on the tours because the track was very rough and narrow. You would need an off-road wheelchair unless they have tarmaced and graded it.

Hope this helps, and have a great time,

Thanks for the replies! The info is much appreciated!

We're definitely going to be camping and taking an SUV out there (a real one, not a cross-over LOL) so not I'm not all worried about driving rough terrain. Going with someone who also has an SCI and we're both nature/outdoors people so I'm not too concerned about "getting around", I love camping. I'd love to hear of any specific places you guys loved that we should check out. I've been reading a bit about Sedona's spiritual and sacred side and it's very interesting. Love how the natives used it as a sacred spots for ages. I think it's going to be gorgeous. I've never been to that part of the country (except for Las Vegas, lol, which doesn't count) and I'm getting more and more excited about checking it out. I think it will be part of a long road trip we're taking from San Diego to Sedona to Vegas and up to Mammoth which will, no doubt, be incredible. Did anybody here go up any of the big rocks? I've been reading that it's a real long hike up some of them and I'm wondering how steep it is. I can do rougher terrain when I've got the knobby tires I use on my chair so I dont think we'd need off road wheelchairs. I'm like a monkey--pretty nimble :mfrlol:

Hi again, I can't help you much with the trails up into the rocks because we didn't get very far. It was a rough sandy / rocky trail, but this was on one of the four days a year that it rains in Sedona, so it rapidly turned into a red-mud like slurry.
However, I do remember there was a very helpful tourist information office in Sedona. I can't help you with a phone number because I'm in England, but if you could find their number from directory enquiries, I'm sure they could give you lots of information.
I bet the various Sedona jeep-tour companies have websites and you could perhaps get the tourist info office phone number from them by ringing up in a chatty sort of way?

Hi! Sedona Arizon is amazing and you'll have such a great time. I was there last Feb. and took tons of photos and wrote all about it: Wheelchair Traveling Guide to Sedona Arizona . I didn't camp but went all around so it will give you some good ideas on Vortexes and whatnot. We also took a day trip to the Grand Canyon, it's not too terribly far from there.

Happy travels!
