See? Got you to thinking, didn't I?

Sure now I can't think of names, but that is because there aren't very many!!! And why not?

I will just have to look up names, but let me tell you this which I thought was a horrid article I read once....

I don't know if anyone ever saw the movie SKYWARD about a paraplegic teen who learns to fly a plane. Well the actress in the starring role was a paraplegic in real life (Suzy...something) and I read an article one time that had an interview with actress Bette Davis who played a character who worked at the airport. In the interview Bette Davis was all upset that they would actually use a 'real paraplegic' in the movie. She thought it was the most awful thing! She thought roles for people with disabilities should not be played by a person with the real thing. Duh.

What the hell kind of thinking is that anyway???

On the other side of the coin, you don't have a role played by a differently-abled person just because they happen to be the better actor either, most of the time.

Sorry, I didn't reply with what you were looking for. You just got me to thinkin'.

Other than Paralympians like Mark Zupan, there really aren't that many people yet in the spot light. Arguably though, Jimmy's MUCH better than Timmy in my book.Posted Image

And hes better than the guy with the voice box too - Ned Nerblansky, the one with the voicebox and arm amputation. Looks like southpark wins for most disabled charactors then, I could also mention about a certain nurse - with a certain thing growing out of her head (just too wrong, it was funny) and they tried to make her feel 'normal' by holding a special day - but dont want to post it incase it upsets........... any southpark fans out there will know who I mean

Mcwriter you did get me thinking.......... and all I can come up with is cartoons. Its good stuff though

Well, there's:

1. The retired para cop on the cartoon "Family Guy."

2. The para on the new teen hit GLEE.

3. The 1970's TV lawyer on "ironside."

4. The late Chris Reeve, R.I.P.

5. Helen Keller

6. The oldest Ingle sister on the long running TV show "Little House on the Prairie" when she was blind.

7. What's that guys name who does the wheel chair backflips, in real life of course??

8. The late President of the US, FDR.

9. Quasimodo, the hunchback of Notre Dame

10. Wasn't Frankenstein disabled? One could argue he might have had assburgers syndrome, because he had a hard time distinguishing floating flowers over floating children.

i really admire bethany hamilton. she's the surfer girl lost her arm to a shark. what i like about her is that after the attack she got back on her board and didn't let the disability change her. she has courage.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Whow she sounds cool. I going to google her Mellowgator.

Qbounce - brilliant list there. I would have added the bloke from avatar too but discovered he was AB - which I thought was very Cr@p actually seeing as all the scenes were 'made' for a disability. Its not that even he had to get up and walk at the end - the big blue avatar did. Oh well - as mcwriter said in her post - it seems that times there not a-changing

Avatar was a hell of a good movie though. It's been said before, any exposure the general population has to the wheel chair community is a good thing, in my book. Getting us out there is more important to me over making sure the role is played by an actual disabled person. I mean, how many lawyers in the movies are actually played by real bar certified lawyers in real life?

I do get what your saying q-bounce. I explain me meaning a bit more..... :girl_devil:

The man in avatar was proper fit, good looking and more importantly - cool. I went to that movie and thought

'whow - some street cred for us people who cant walk well or at all. Maybe no longer shall I feel the need be put on the scrapheap of broke and knackered'.

Soooo here I was happy when I heard a lot of people coming out the film saying 'no way was he disabled he is too gorgeous looking'. I went home and cried. :suicide:

You know what q-bounce I didnt even know I had an sci then as the doctors had not found what was wrong - i was just in agony. I tell you now too if i hadnt have found this place I would still feel like a peice of shite and think i was destined for the rubbish bin - and maybe I would have started to act like that too - thus my interest in this thread
