I drove to Carlsbad Caverns from San Diego and it was a long trip. As for staying nearby, I stayed in Las Cruces at a Residence Inn. I do recommend that you bring warm clothing as we descended lower and lower into the cave, I became very cold. As it takes us longer to cool down and warm up just remember this when going in. I had on a sweat pant outfit plus I brought along a jacket just in case. I was so glad I did. I ended up putting on my hood because my ears were really cold. I also had on gloves. I did not descend all the way either due to the accessibility issue. Also, remember to ask for the discount ticket for your attendant. My brother was my attendant and he got in for free. I hope you are not afraid of bats, because they were everywhere. Happy Travels.

I can't help you on transportation since I did this as part of my cross-country trip in April 2009 and I drove there. But I did stay in Carlsbad at the Holiday Inn Express. I don't remember anything special about the hotel so it probably had a nice roll-in shower and was fine for accessibility.

Carlsbad Caverns was great. The big room there is mostly accessible with some rough slopes here and there. The path is great if you have someone to help and doable solo if you're good at steep slopes that twist and turn.

If you haven't gotten one yet you might want to look intop getting an Access Pass for the National Parks. It gives free/reduced admission to all National Parks and is free for those with disabilities.

Thinking a bit about it you might want to confirm with the Holiday Inn Express that the room does have a roll-in shower. I think it did but with this trip having so many hotel stays they all tend to blur.

Also I was wondering about why you're going to Carlsbad Caverns. It is a great spot but it's a heck of a trip from California and I didn't see much to do there other then the caverns. So maybe a half a day of things to do?

Here's my trip report from my day in Carlsbad.
