I watched the video. The man is still a quad, and walking is his exercise, not his mode of transport. Using his story to reinforce the american mantra "if you just work hard enough you can do anything".. I find that distasteful exploitation. He can't do anything. He can barely walk, That said he has done a great job, and a mile is a LONG WAY.

How about this: If you work hard enough you can do better.

He can walk better and about 9.5/10s of a mile further than I can right now.

Howabout let's be happy for someone else's accomplishment/progress, instead of angry that the general public doesn't really "get it"?

Some people hook up again.
Some do not.
I don't know how much "work" has to do with that.
Maybe nobody knows.

I did not mean to imply that this guy's experience is everyone's experience.

I just thought it was good that he could do, and wanted to do, what he did.

I, too,, am happy that he has improved,,, But as Tet mentioned,, Distasteful and exploitation are the first two things that I first think of when I listen to the report. I am disappointed and offended.

NO,,, You can NOT accomplish anything through hard work. You can accomplish something. And that is what the report should have emphasized. It gives the uninformed masses the mistaken idea that because some of us are still unable to walk,, we aren't TRYING hard enough.

Trust me,,, as one of those who is STILL unable to walk,,, and who has, and still does try,,, I can tell you that that is BULL SHIT.

Did I say I was offended???

jim G- I did say I'm happy for the guy. I can always use another inspiration for hard work and perseverance.

Mary-Anne, I'm glad you posted the link. I just had to add my 2 cents worth of cynicism.

Edlee, my neighbor- come on, wiggle those toes a little harder and channel that anger. In another 483 years you will be walking for sure, but you gotta focus.

I was told to pray harder, once. Does that count?

My point was lets just be happy for the guy about what he's accomplished and to hell with a television writer's words about working hard overcomes everything.

Most AB's don't get it, so don't let it bother you.

OTOH.....it's not always about inspiring SCIs.....it's also about inspiring people with half the battles/challenges we have to get off their asses and stop whining about the little things they have to deal with.

I was just told last night at a meeting to "Just keep having faith! The more faith you have, the better you will get!" I wanted to say "Lady, faith isn't my problem!! My spine is!!" But since my children and I were the special singers, I just smiled and said "Thank you." Wouldn't you just love to chop their finger off and ask them to pray to have it work without it being put back on? Hey, I am not being cynical - those of you who know me know that I love God and believe in faith and prayer but people do not get it. I just thought I would reply to this that even from the Christian perspective, this prayer stuff is crazy. Not from a lack of knowing God can work point of view but even medically, they are not consistent with their "prayer" advice. Okay, that is my two cents on that.

As for the guy walking - I am glad that he could do that to make money for his organization. At least he is living his life!
