I'm a care assistant and I've been working for a young lady who has a c6,7 injury for about a year. She didn't need any help with her bowels, however, my contracts just ended and I've been offered a new job with a man. He has a different injury than my previous client and requires more help. I'd love to take the job, but I'm a bit clueless as to what he will need me to do. All the job discription said was 'help with bowel prep'. Can anyone tell me what this means, as I want to feel sure about what it all involves before I take the job. Also, I've only ever helped a lady with a catheter, so I wouldn't know what it's like to help a man. I hope you don't mind me asking this, I would really appreciate a reply. Thank you very much.

Its great you want to take the job. I don't know if you're uk based or across the 'pond' but you should really get training for bowel evacuation or help with and to catheterise a man. In uk nurses (properly trained Registered General Nurses not just carers) cannot cathetrise men without special training. I'm not sugesting either is difficult but its best to know the full 'ins and outs' to know exactly what to do.
I suspect the bowels will involve putting a suppository(ies) or enema(s) into the rectum and them doing a manual evacuation a while later but its possible to damage the rectum if you're not taken through how to do it.
So my advice would be tell the guy you're very keen but wish to improve your skills for him by getting him to send you on a training course(s).

Good advice Simon...

Years ago I did a bit of nursing training with intellectually handicapped children. I had to do the suppositories etc but never a manual. Back then we just sat them on the loo (or commode chair) and let nature do the rest. These kids werent paralized though. I wouldnt have a clue how to do a manual.

Hi Honey...yeah good on you for taking on the job - It can be a bit daunting to be poking around someone elses backside! especially when youve never done it before. But like lots of other things its something that has to be done, and you do get used to it. I agree with Simon that you need some training. If you work for a care organisation tell them you want the job but need training. Its not fair on you (or him) or safe, to do this sort of job without it.

I don,t know where you are from ,but i went to the spinal unit at stoke m and the nurse there taught me how to do bowel evacuation . Also the local distict nurse has just been training me to do cath side of things .I am very new to all of this ,so there might be some other help out there .Good luck

Hi i am tetra C567 my day starts with carer coming in she gets me a drink and a fag.
And then she helps on to my side helps put my legs up and then she puts a glove on and gets some ky jelly on her finger and puts it round my bum hole then she puts her finger up my bum feels round to help get any thing out some times two fingers then she gets a enema and puts that in and waits for that to work then the fingers again to make sure its empty then she takes me to have a bath or a shower wher she takes off the conveen and washs my penis makes sure she pulls foreskin back and washs befor she puts new conveen on then back on the bed to get dressed and up does this 3 times a week

I still think you should do a certified course, so if anything goes wrong you don't end up in court being untrained in the proceedure. You need to think of these eventualities, in this day and age, sad.
