I have been complete with no motor function for 20 years. The other day I am sitting in my recliner watching a movie when I noticed a muscle jumping in my thigh. As I am prone to do from time to time, I immediately tried to compel the action again. I then worked my way down my leg straining to use various muscle groups (all to no avail of course)until I reached my toes. Already bored with this fruitless exercise, I tried to wriggle my big toe and...it worked! Always the cynic, I then used a sequence of movements, like 5 times fast and 3 times slow, to convince myself that I was not triggering a spasm with some slight twist of my torso (I can trigger spasms that way).I wriggled it every time!
I have heard similar stories and wonder if anyone has had a similar experience or knows of any scientific explanation?

i was able to wiggle my toes after being injured for 7 years as well. i had to go off valium when i was pregnant. apparently my meds were masking movement.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

For near 19 years I have been able to wiggle toes at will on both feet, still working on tippy toeing around the place!!!

Mentioned it to the consultant while in rehab, his reply, ah you're an incomplete, hard tablet to swallow. that ended that!

Keep moving them, don't get any hopes up though, as I found the rest of the leg is needed for the whole tip toe..........

Wiggle, wiggle wiggle! That's awesome!

I had something similar happen about 3-4 years post injury, but I have always been incomplete. I had fairly good sensation immediately after my injury, but it took me a few years before I noticed my big left toe jerk. I did the same thing, trying to trigger it in a sequence to make sure it wasn't just a fluke. I'll be darned, it kept doing it. About 9 years post injury my right toes have started doing the same thing. I thought the doctors told me this sort of thing only happened 1-year post injury or less.
3 doctors diagnosed me with hysterical paralysis (weee!), 1 diagnosed an incomplete T7, another T2 and the last (and most accurate) T5. Trampolines are BAD. Sleep is unpredictable. And never kiss strangers. Life has moved on.

That's really cool and surprising after such a long time! Congratulations. Hopefully you will be able to repeat it. My body functions in weird ways too lately. The other day I was eating salad and spilled the dressing all over my legs. I actually could feel the fluid on my right knee. I haven't felt much in my legs for over 20 years (I do however feel it if I break my bones  ). So that was very surprising as well.

Awesome! Grats to you. As far as I know I've always been able to wiggle my toes a little bit. After one previous surgery I lost the ability for a while, but then I regained it a few months later.
