Hi There,
Can anyone help me, my daughter who is a wheelchair user had a suprapubic catheter inserted on the 3 Dec. 10 and we have had no problems with it until it was replaced a week ago. Over the past two days she has had episodes of wetting her underwear and is now afraid that there is a problem and it may have to be taken out.
It has been a great success and she has been able to enjoy life me and can go out and not have be afraid of having to get lifted to the loo etc.
Please advise asap.

Hi darby, welcome to the forums...
Does she have any other symptoms? Perhaps it is a UTI?
I have a SPC and leak when I have a severe UTI (like right now)...the change of catheter may be coincidence or it may have been a cause...I change my own every three weeks, more if I have a UTI - try not to worry so much about losing the SPC, as from my year-long experience this has not happened though I am not an expert - but getting to the cause of the leak...
Is the catheter clogged? Was there blood during the change, sometimes a clot will clog mine and I have to change it again...
Do you see blood and/or sediment in the line and/or bag?
Also, do you flush her bladder with sterile saline? This is supposed to help keep down UTI's...I wish you well and hope you find the cause and remedy the situation fast...

ive had a sp since 2008, and wish i would have done it sooner. ive had no problems, until recently when i had it changed, it was kinda stuck, but it was replaced easily, but since then ive had excruciating pain when i go over a bump in my chair...very bizarre. as far as incontinence, i only get that if i dont cath enough times during the day. is she getting any flow of urine out of her tube??? of course call the doc and ask him, in the mean time make sure to cath enough throughout the day. sorry if this didnt help. good luck

Hi there I think advice from S & W Winger is spot on - my daughter has had sp for 3 years and only time she would bypass is if she has UTI but if it has just happened after catheter change - could be just sediment of little blood "stuck" in pipe - perhaps just try to clear that first and also just gently perhaps "move the pipe around" - could be a simple solution - but if not sorted in a day or so I would get the dr or nurse in to check - UTI can be detected immediately with a dipstick! Also, if the urine seems to be draining fine into the bag then the "blockage" option wouldn't apply implying a possible infection. My sympathies as this is unfortunately just something they have to endure and my daughter would always feel really lousy with a UTI (sweaty, headaches etc) hope my little bit helps!

Thank you all for your replies I think my daughter has UTI as her urine is nearly orange, she is drinking water but I have started her on an antibiotic and she feels better to day. She had no wetting episode yesterday hope it will be the same today.
Thanks and regards
Darby
