I was introduced to “nodding” quite recently by Bev, who is a master nodder by all accounts, and was wondering how many of you also nod, because I have been nodding with varying degrees of success. Although on one occasion I was reported to the authorities but no formal charges were made and I was let off with a “Police caution”
I think I have got the nodding down to a fine art, and prefer the double nod as opposed to the single nod, but I am interested to learn any new techniques other nodder's use.
I have also made enquiries to the Guinness book of records to see what the record is for the most nods in 1 day as I can do as many as 180 per minute in sprint mode, I will be going for the shortest (.178 of a second) and longest(12 hours, 3 minutes 34 seconds) nod categories as well.
I am taking the opportunity of intensive training over the next 3 weeks as I am going on a cruise were there is 3000 passengers and 1780 staff to nod at on a 24 hour, seven days a week basis.
Would any body be interested in forming a nodder's club were we could meet up for social nodding a few times a year, if so please forward your interest on to Bev aka S W Winger who will be glad to issue with your membership forms and a welcome nod of course.

I have to assume you are referring to the "non-verbal nod" and I see no mention of the "expressive nod" nor differentiation between the "downward nod" and the "upward nod".

I know there are purists out there, so I hope this type of information will be made available for membership purposes.

What are specific nod categories by Guiness? Which particular category will you be shooting for? I should like to cheer you on.

:head_brick_wall-1: Oh Pauly, Pauly, Pauly, have taught you Nothing? Alas, I have failed miserably as a teacher of the Complete Art of the Chair Nod...this is a Secret Nod, thus only those chosen and indoctrinated would even begin to comprehend...I thought Tinbasher lent some understanding of this aspect when we discussed the Biker Wave, no? Well, I do see you are Nodding well upon my wall [hopefully this I am not mistaking for head-banging]...

OK, well then, the Nod has been outed....hopefully this will not water-down its use and effectiveness in our special fellowship...but omg! I could just see it now: Mum's with prams Nodding, cabbies offering Nods, door-to-door salespeople soon Nodding to one another, omg a whole World Nodding, soon even in unison...but I digress...again, since you have outed the Nod, I do admire your efforts to be as best as possible at The Nod...therefore, a few pointers, as I have tried to impart upon your wall:

1. the Nod as the slow Nod
2. the Nod as slow chin down Nod
3. the upward chin Nod
4. the double Nod
5. the side glance Nod
6. the rapid Nod
7. rarely, the rapid multiple Nod
8. various Nodding techniques

These all have purposes and special uses, along with several of their sub-classifications, all to be discussed exclusively in private. While we rarely find rapid Nods useful or healthy, given as some of us do have cervical issues, there are a few specific instances where rapid Nodding will not only suffice, but it is absolutely necessary...therefore, I still applaud your endeavor in this category...

However, it the graceful slow nod that we find not only the most useful, but also the most meaningful...it carries with It the most weight of all nods...thus, I find your ambitions in this direction to be the most admirable...master the Art of the Graceful Slow Nod, and you will Nod your way well in the World, making connections, receiving special considerations, allowances, and treatment...oh, but all this is Secret...

Nod on, my friend, Nod on [never out! unless of course great Fun has preceeded it]...

Ah yes Runer, the secret language of babies...who better but Noddy to tell us how it's done! Though, language eludes them, communication does not! And all this time Mums with their prams thought their infants were simply nodding out...

It is with awe that I tiptoe backwards and out of a room of secret nodding.

I shall take this with the utmost discretion and shall not reveal what I have learned here, and shall endeavor to hold my head still when passing the occasional nod, never showing with a glance that I suspect membership, no never.

Oh my McArtist...but do you not even know? You are already a member by close association...you have the basics down as noted in your first post...and I am absolutely certain that YOU of all AB people have been nodding for years...

I can now see were I was going wrong, I making the old mistake of quantity over quality, so I thank you kindly for your helpful advice which I will put into practice. I would also like it confirmed that the angle to stop the downward nod is 40 degrees, because when I go further then the standard 40 degrees everybody in the nearby vicinity starts to ask me if I have drop something and a mass search ensues. So far on these recoveries I have been given a piece of old chewing gum, a 2p coin, a used match and someone tied up my shoe lace.

Is there a good training regimen for nodding? I have trouble with neck muscle control. I though perhaps a good training session a few times a week might help.

(Of course, nothing helps with the rest of the stupid body, so why should I think anything might help the neck?)

spot, spot, spot...if we could help Pauly, we could help you! YES! For further details, write to our secret Nodders Club, enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope today! Be sure to join our emailing list for news of casual get-togethers, new techniques, conferences, welcomes to new members, upcoming website news [password protected of course], and more...!

And now that Pauly has outed the Nod and thus our formerly secret club, it only seems a fitting honour to make him the newest instructor in nodding...thus, spot, you will be working closely with Pauly...good bye and good luck...oops, I mean, enjoy the intensive training, sure to at least allow side to side movement more readily...

I am writing to the Olympic committee and asking if synchronized nodding can be recognised as an Olympic sport.
Would any one be interested in joining the team? If so please contact Bev at her usual address and mark the correspondence “Nodders, London Olympics 2012”.
As this is only a demonstration, team members from various countries will be allowed to compete in the same team. Please be quick as we only have 12 positions to fill and be sure to give to Bev your neck measurements for the appropriate neck brace to be made if you are selected. You should be made aware under Olympic rules neck spasms are not permitted.

I was under the impression from “grand master Bev” that when activating a nod only movement from the head was permitted, we must keep the standards up, other wise we will be bending our knees when we nod as well, and almost converting it into a bow or even worse a duck.

:recourse: Bowing (nodding??) in respect to this wonderfully strange and insight-ful thread. Thanks, paul! Thanks, Bev!

I read it with pleasure, remembering special nods of 2CV (tiny Citroen) drivers years ago - to all in Germany, only to those with the same colour in France .... (my first car ever, red!). Quite a community of drivers.

And here? Well, I did feel I ought to tiptoe out, like mcwriter - but then read Bev's very kind words to ABs. Might I join in the secret - not-so-secret any more nodding society? With a very small nod only, perhaps? If I may ...? =)
