Hi all, have just recently joined this site and have read a few of the posts. What a brilliant place for support and information!
I wanted to know if anybody else has found that their skin changes colour for random reasons or even no reason at all? I've noticed that my feet, my arms and face and my chest, they will be fine 1 min and then red and blotchy the next. What is particularly weird for instance is the whole right side of my face Would glow bright red and a perfect straight line down the middle of my forehead and nose, right to my chin would separate it from the perfectly normal colour on the left side of my face!
Is this a weird circulation thing for tetras or should I be ringing the Dr?!

Thanks, Squelen

Welcome :) If I had to guess I would say your color changing is due to autonomic dysreflexia, I get the same thing doing stretches, left side of face = right leg and right side for left leg. It goes away fairly soon for me but you may want to talk to your doctor about it.

Your right about the circulation as well. Blood pools in the areas where circulation has slowed causing swelling and skin discoloration, like reddish to blue or purple blotches. I'm not sure about your face, but it could be relatable to SCI. If you aren't itching and it isn't flaking, like psoriasis might cause, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments. No itching or flaking, but certainly strange redness and it would also be hot! It does pass away though after a while so I won't worry too much  it was just so weird... and i'll have really warm left hand but my right would be freezing. ius that bad circulation? Sq x

The hot hand one side, ice cold hand the other, and flushing, and the vertical line across your face (sometimes sweating on one side of your face, bone dry on the other) are all symptoms of your autonomic nervous system being damaged from your injury and early signs Autonomic Dysreflexia.

If you are not aware of the more life threatening symptoms of AD I would strongly advise you looking it up on here and/or firing some questions off. Better make sure you have all the info to hand and medicine available before it happens to you (and at your level you will get it at some time) and not after.

I xx

Welcome aboard Squelen!

For me, the red blotchy patches about the arms, chest and neck area are early signs of AD. The darker the red and the more area involved usually means my BP is rising and that my body is in more distress. I usually start out with light pink patches about my upper chest and upper arms (biceps), if things get worse, more red, as a precaution I start checking my BP. I usually have a sight headache that progresses into a full on headache when things get worse.

Sometimes its just me overheating, it can be a full bladder/bowels, other times it's a sign of pressure (feet, thighs, butt) so be careful of bedsores, other times I have no clue whats happening. Stay calm, evaluate how you feel (be honest), check your vitals (pulse, temperature, BP, etc.) and if you begin to feel uncomfortable...get medical help!

Read up on AD, see the link below, take care and enjoy the site!
