Really interested in starting wheelchair sports, in particular basketball. however, unfortunately due to the original A&E hospital i was in after my accident, i am still recovering from grade 4 pressure sores that were down to the bone on both heels. tissue viability have insisted i dont wear shoes or trainers yet and i have to perm wear Prevalon Boots - see link.

My link

I hate them and cant wait until im in shoes - been over a year now :-(

I'm fed up of waiting around for them to heal however do you think i'll be allowed to start any sports until im in trainers due to the Health & Safety world we live in these days?

prevalon boots don't offer a lot of protection to your feet and toes can get crushed and ripped apart really easily so I would personally err on the side of caution until you are in shoes again, you don't want to cause more trouble, unless you can find something non contact.

PS link still not working!

I couldn't wear shoes for a year either and it was a really big thing. I'd be especially careful too, especially with the pressure sores etc; you don't want any infections.

Trinity - i know, and when the velcro goes they just fall off in the middle of transfers.i swear ive broken toes during car transfers and then once im in drivers seat i cant actually see them as ive got long legs being 6ft 3. had to buy my own now too @ £107.00 a pair!! keeping the receipts for if i can claim against the hosp who gave them to me.

Im so impatient though but spose ive waited this long and they are almost there now. maybe in the interim i'll try and find a local team to help at training or something and try to learn the rules

123 - how did you cope? its been 14 months now :-(

got a check up tmrw at stanmore tissue viability and im taking my trainers with me just in case they are ready or to see if there is anyway round this

I know, it's a 'mare! I was discharged from hospital in the middle of a freezing cold winter and ended up cooped in for longer than I should've been due to the shoe issue. The first few times I attempted to put shoes on I actually cried with frustration because I couldn't do it. It was awful.

Good luck with your appointment at Stanmore tomorrow. I'm waiting to hear from my NS about my MRI scan results. Will probably have to chase that up - I usually do! Hopefully they will have some answers for you. Can't believe the price of those boots, you'd think they were designer!

i was previously size 11 1/2 but stanmore recommeded buying a couple of sizes bigger due to swelling, i too reckon im gonna struggle with them though. ive got 5 pairs of trainers all ready and waiting.

thanks. i wish they were more proactive too. hopefully your receive your MRI results feedback soon.

I know they are horrible and the colours make them stand out so much. i always see people looking at them when im out which i hate but spose i would have done the same and glanced before all of this.
