Does anybody out there use a software package that can create transcripts of a conversation, lets say from a DVD into a word or similar document.

It's not for a quad or tetra but rather for my wife. She is studying counseling and in this year of study they do role play counseling sessions which are recored onto DVD, she then has to write it up word for word as a transcript and then analyze the session.

For her to play and pause the DVD hundreds of times and type out the transcript is just not going to happen and I wondered if anyone out there uses any software products that would even come close to doing this?

I think that dragon lets you transcribe from a data recorder.

Windows from Vista onwards has built in voice recognition. I have tried it out of interest and it works pretty well although probably not good enough for a quad.

I know about the Windows stuff and that's for operating the actual computer. I'm looking for something that if you put a DVD of a counseling interview in your DVD drive then the software can produce a text transcript of the interview. I've been looking and even the old favorite Dragon is like the others in training to recognize one single voice in order to be accurate.

My wife is going to be in a situation where she will always be in the interview but the other person will change and also both of them will be in an ambient setting of a room and not using a microphone very close to their mouthes to ensure maximum clarity.

Maybe what I'm looking for is either ridiculously expensive or not available.

I was hoping that maybe the Quad / Tetra members here may have an idea.

Like you say, being unable to train it to recognise each voice would probably beat any commercially available software. Try the CIA. They've probably got something that recognises all sorts of exotic accents and languages.

You can dictate into WORD with it I tried it but whether it would keep up with a DVD I dont know.

I got Windows 7 on my PC in the office so I may give it a go. Basic problems are going to be recognizing different voices and any background noise interfering with the audio input.

Out of the box suggestion.

Get your wife to listen to the dvd via headphones and simultaneously dictate what is being said to the voice recognition software. That way it only has to learn her voice. It will take a little longer than if done by some sophisticated voice to document software (if such exists) but will be a lot quicker and easier than typing it all out.

Actually I think GB has the solution! It may take longer than directly dictating the transcripts but it has to be far quicker than typing manually, and less room for error

Will do, I may even wake my dear wife up at 4am and go "Eureka I have a Solution!" and then pretend it was all my own idea until it fails of course then I'll give you the credit!
