i have come to the conclusion that i will not be doing very much of any thing this year. i am 8 months post accident and still waiting to move back into my house. Looking at what i can do i am very much interested in getting into sports. specifically the violent ones. hockey murderball ect. looking around and watching youtube videos gets me excited. however what puts the halt to that excitement is looking at the price of equipment. My insurance has already put bills in my pocket that most people do not need. i have to pay for my catheters. i have to pay a third of my rehab cost. i had to pay $1300 out of pocket to get my personalized wheelchair. So this is my question. How do i justify buying a $3000 sport chair to play murderball. or a $6000 hand cycle. I do want to play but i can't afford this. it is disappointing because right now i have nothing but time. i am not going to take my day to day chair to play this. it took me 8 months to get it. i am not going to go through that crap again. i am willing to try out all sports. i am more interested in the ones that are more violent. someone give me some advice. it is not like my football days prior to my accident were i go selling candy door to door for new jerseys.

Try joining a club and seeing if anyone will lend you a sports chair, and then look to buy 2nd hand. Unfortunately life is tough when there's not enough money to go round. You have to make decisions between things.
How you justify a spend is really a matter of how much you get out of it. I don't have any TV satellite subscriptions because I don't watch TV, so it'd be a waste of money, but I justify choosing a car with cruise control because I do many miles and it makes the driving so much easier. If you throw yourself into murderball and it keeps you sane, makes you feel alive and you've got a great network of friends as a result of it, then you put it to the top of your list of priority spends. How you achieve it is up to you. Do a sponsored eyebrow shave, organise a beer drinking marathon, whatever it takes....
Don't fixate on the "I can'ts" in life, but start working out what you want and how you're gonna get it. Start with a club because there'll be plenty of people who've been in your situation.

Haha.. no! I'm so pushed for time at the moment that I'm not feeling that creative. Apologies for recycling the same old joke!!! (Wanted to reply and if I sat and thought about it too long, it would end up like everything else on my to do list!)

I agree start by visiting a club and getting more information. There could be huge benefit to your health & rehabilitation through sports if you could find a way to fund it so i don't think you need to think too hard about justification - if you have the opportunity go ahead and do it.
Sometimes there can be assistance available to fund sports chairs, I am sure most clubs would also have loan chairs available for you to trial and use short term. Ask around through clubs and see what they can come up with. Each country/state has different systems so it's a matter of talking to the appropriate people to find out if there is any help available to you in your location. Worth checking out!
Disability is unfortunately horrifically expensive, we have had to self fund up until now and have forked out $100's of thousands
up until the point that we are now totally broke, something that everyone with a disability has to contend with to a certain extent. Husband used to enjoy playing wheelchair rugby, I know he would still be doing it if possible - it's also a great way to meet other positively framed disabled people who are socialising & having fun together and making a go of it.
I wish you well with your enquiries, hopefully there is some help for you to get into playing sports - the benefit would far outweigh the cost and I think this recently post SCI you are sounding very motivated to do things so well done in that regard.

Murderball is really just a nickname for wheelchair rugby, it's not a whole seperate sport. Like racing, there are variations, but it's all racing. Hobbies are expensive, sporting hobbies are worse and violent ones are lifestyle influencing. They are also, in my opinion, very necessary for your physical and mental well-being. It's not an issue of justifying it, but rather budgeting for it. Somethings you just have to save for, I have a custom AR-15 upper, not even the complete rifle, being built for longrange comp, and I told the gunsmith don't even bother trying to get it done before spring because I have to set cash aside for it. On top of that, it'll have to be rebarreled every 1,000 rounds to stay viable in competition. I'd do without a lot of things before I'd give up hunting/shooting, I'd go crazy if I couldn't go blow stuff away, lol. You'll find a way, you need that outlet for a lot of reasons. Watch for used equipment, take this time to get into the best shape you can.
