hi all,

yes, it's been decades since i've posted here. i've been doing better with pain, trying stuff here and there, right now i'm on hydrocodone, tramadol and morphine. my dr. just upped the morphine dose and it does seem to have an impact.

it's still difficult, i'm trying to go longer days as I'm hoping to get back to work full time. yesterday, i was up and about from 10am to 9pm. around the late evening i noticed a massive pain, the sensation felt like severe burning, all around from injury point (mid waist/belly button) all the way down. i would describe it as best as being a fresh piece of meat dropped in to a fying pan full of hot oil....just sizzling, burning, massive sizzling.

by the time i lied down around 9pm i felt better within an hour. just wondering if anyone has a clue to this. of course i still feel bone/nerve pain throughout the day but i'm able to manage, yet when this massive burning sensation hit, it just knocked me out.

sitting in a frying pan sizzling with hot oil on the highest temperature. any insight?

Sounds like classic nerve generated pain, you're on some prety strong stuff already but are you on any amatipitylene or gabapentin? these target nerve pain specifically and you may want to try and talk to your Doc about these. They work in different ways but I get a feeling of intense burning in my left thigh like some one is going for it with a blow torch. I'm on Tramadol, Ibuprofen and other usual stuff like paracetamol, diazepam etc, but they won't touch it. Amitriptylene does but it knocks me out and I find it very hard to wake up and actually become conscious, I discussed this just on Friday with my Spinal Consultant and I'm going to go over to Gabapentin to try that and see it it works and does not sedate me so much. I am 23 months post injury and have only had nerve pain for the last 5 months but it's getting worse and worse unfortunately as the nerves regenerate a little (as usual the wrong ones!)

See if you can give it a try if you have not already been down that road,

Good Luck.

I'd stick to less potent drugs than heavy-duty opiates...maybe take up the practice of meditation and or the art of ignoring when it comes to the burning cause the amount of morphine and oxys you would need to turn off the fire for any length of time would be devestating to your life, brain and emotions as well as any relationships you hold dear..Besides, over-usage of opiates cause constipation and that can lead to complications worse than the burning.....perhaps try smoking some reefer...doesn't work for me but does the job for many...In my case, half my body burns 24-7...but with the use of small doses of ativan, lots of meditation and the passage of three years or so I got my head off the burning and it became a minor aggrivation...Mind over matter...If you don't mind it don't matter...that worked for me but we are all different...

the burning is nerve pain. lyrica and nuerontin do help but there are side effects. pain comes with the territory. i hope you find a way to deal with it and that your pain doesn't lead to depression.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

thanks, i tried lyrica and didn't notice any impact. so far the pain hasn't depressed me, i'm doing ok there, but the thought of full time work and feeling this way, that depresses me, seeing other people at work who have no idea how much tremendous pain i'm in, and that i just want to escape somewhere and lay down flat.

unless you're in our situation you have no idea how bad the pain can be, i often think i'd rather give birth 3x a week with no pain meds than go through this...

thanks a lot, i'm going to mention this to my dr, we're going down the list and crossing options off, i only have a few left. never heard of any of these but i'm curious, thanks a lot for insight.

I've read many times here that the burning / scalding pain is something to welcome because it indicates that the nerves are regenerating. I was always a contrary sod, but I seem to have the reverse situation where the burning may be caused by the nerves deteriorating rather than regenerating.

Until a few months ago I had weakness in my legs and no control at all over my feet. I only experienced back pain, and tingling and numbness in the bum and saddle area, and down both legs when I stood for more than a minute or two. Apart from that I was relatively free from acute pain.

For about 3 months I have been regularly woken from sleep at night by intense burning pain down my right thigh which gradually reduces when I sit on the side of the bed. It has gradually become noticeably more fierce and occurs several times every night when I sleep flat on my back. I've been getting the saddle numbness and the burning thigh during the day when seated as well lately, and the burning area now extends further down the leg.

I have been taking 2 x Co-Codamol 30mg/500mg at night for years, and over the past 2 weeks I have gradually built up to 30mg of Amitriptyline each evening. Now the burning during the day often feels more like freezer burn than heat. It is irritating but tolerable. The night time burning is only slightly less severe and still wakes me. It is taking longer to subside as well.

It is obvious that my condition is worsening and I am worried at how rapidly. My GP is aware of this but wants to see how I get on with the Amitriptyline. I wonder if anyone else has noticed similarly degenerating symptoms, and what was their outcome. I am obese with reduced lung function so am not a good candidate for surgery, which would be difficult anyway because of severe multi-level lumbar stenosis. It looks as though my discomfort will have to be controlled medicinally. What do others find best for masking the burning / scalding sensation at night?

Carpe Diem

GB, I have had scalding hot pain flashes on my inner thighs especially the right side since I was injured. It's way past being regeneration and probably worse now because of spinal degeneration. I find stretching my back out gives some relief and sleeping on my left side with the left leg straight and the right knee pulled up close to my chest, little rotund myself, may give slight relief.

I can relate to snake and mellow, lyica worked wonders for a few weeks until the sides kicked in. Neurontin, tramadol both are useless. Opiates help some with all the other arthritic pain but I just withdrew from 30 mg of HCD a day and trying to stay with 5mg twice a day. Trying to ignore helps a little but just yelling "Hurt damn you, hurt" helps more.........

A stable dose of lyrica and amitriptyline stands me in reasonable stead along with at least once or twice daily tramadol (early in the day as if i take it in the evening I suffer from severe insomnia) plus as required dihydrocodeine (again I probably take this once or twice a day but I can take it any time of the day), if all that fails i have morphine but I try my hardest to avoid it

Hey,

I'm a C6-7 Asia A and i've stopped all pain meds and nerve pain meds because they were knocking me out! Where I live, Ontario, Canada, medical marijuana is legal and is an awesome substitue. I do not smoke pot, since my lung capacity is not great however I do use edibles. I have butter made and cook things like cookies or brownies and ingest them. There is no nerve pain about one hour after ingestion and I am not sleepy (depending on the strain i choose to use) and it's all natural.

Just a thought!
