I have been having a terrible problem with dehydration lately even though I drink plenty of water. I do not have much of an appetite other than yogurt, but I have been having to get fluid a good bit lately. Is anyone else having this problem and if so how have you combated the problem? :dunno:

Thanks,
Chel

I get that when I get stressed about things , that may not be whats causing it for you , but it could be .

hi chel,

if you take ditropan or pain meds they can really leave you with a dry mouth. i was so dryed out by ditropan my eyes were dry so i talked to my dr and he switced me to oxytrol patch and that helped that problem.

i'm a terrible eater too. i will go days on toast and yogart and soda.

another thing it could be is dieabetis(spelling?) i know being thristy is a sympton of this. just a thought.

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!

Might sound daft but drinking too much or too fast can cause dehydration, too. Check that you are not over-drinking and favour steady tipples throughout the day rather than bursts of drinking.

I sweat from my chest up even when it is cold. I have no appetite,I keep a dry mouth and also my skin looks and feels funny. Tuesday when I went to the ER for Pain they said I needed some fluid too because I was a bit dehydrated. I try to make myself eat, but I just end up vomiting, yogurt or the ice cups are about all the food I can tolerate. Do any of you have these problems?

Hi Chel,
all the advice you've been given on here is great, one other thing you could ask your Doctor to investigate is your kidney function.

Last year I ended up in hospital with kidney problems, after lots of investigations it turned out that my SCI had damaged the nerve to my kidneys and as a result they have gone into overdrive - it means I am always dehydrated even when I drink plenty. I have to balance the amount of fluid my kidneys are pumping out (about 6L most days) with my fluid intake. Its always there in the back of my mind and it affects my life every day but I feel so much better when my fluids are properly balanced.

when you're sweaty ,and your skin looks funny - thats your body trying to tell you there is a problem. it could be related to your kidneys, bowels or even a toenail problem. you're probably dehydrated from the sweats. check your kidneys first ,then bowels, then toenails.may be sitting on a wrinkle or need to do a weight shift. usually, something is causing your body pain somewhere. i drink diluted gatorade when i've had the sweats. it'll also cause your potassium levels to drop. causing leg cramps or spaz.
it seems it's always something and never eazy. it can be a bit of a guessing game. do you know about AD and does your doctor?

I am not sure about AD, but my neuro thinks the dehydration could be linked to my MS, thyroids are diabetes which is under control usually, but just coming out of a Flare and massive doses of Steroids. Thank you all for advising me to check it out, I alerted my Dr, but he wants me to watch it closely too. In the summer time usually have to keep gatorade in my system, so gonna sip my drinking from now on because I usually wait until I'm thirsty to drink @ once. So thank you all for the awesome Info and advice!

Hi chel

i

Hi there, I get a horrific dry mouth which mean i'm always drinking. Plus its pleasurable too - with our other senses gone, it amplifies how nice it is I reckon.

I hold me urine too much - i cant tell when i need to go. But when I do 'go', theres lots. Maybe this causes me to be dehydrated because i loose too much water that way. Also with AD and body tempreture problems I sweat above injury a lot so could be loosing water that way too?

Am I dehydrated or just constantly living with a dry mouth, I'm not sure. If the same happens to you - it may be the case, like nomis says, drinking too much can cause dehydration.

I eat a lot of grapes - fruit I heard is a good way to get back water. Do you like smoothies? frozen fruit and yogurt (which you like) tastes like ice-cream and makes you feel good too. You like yogurt so maybe this could be a good idea for you? A food blender mixes it up well. You can have it thick - but if you like it more rubby, just add non-concentrate fruit juice too.

Let me know whay you think Chel/others. Now you mention it I could do with some knwledge on this too

Hi Goose and Pinkcloud,

I am gonna check out the site too, you know I tried a smoothie a couple of times, but it just don't set well to me, I think one reason is because I keep a metallic taste in my mouth all the time; ice seems to settle it and my tummy usually I can eat blue raspberry or Lemon, but most of the time it's lemon, but trying to watch it from every angle. I would like to thank everyone for their help and suggestions because sometimes these things can be nerve reckoning.

Hope you all are having a great day!

Hi Chel, how awful to have a metallic taste in your mouth all the time. Have you asked your doctor about this? May be worth mentioning as I heard somewhere it can be a symptom of something, I cant remember what though I am sorry.

So eating and drinking sounds as though this pleasure is not available to you on top of sci.....how awful. A friend of mine who has this too says it tastes like blood, a metalic mouth (i wonder if this is because of iron - or is iron in the body not like the metal iron? I generally dont know). So eating must taste like eating blood - no wonder you can only eat yogurt. I so hope theres a cure out there for you Chel.

When we are hungry this makes pain worse, so your life must be soooooooo difficult. I hope you get some kind of help and once again can eat any food you enjoy
