Hello to all. I am new here but i am having a problem... one of our home health nurse put a rice bag in the microwave and burnt my son to the point of second degree burns. I really am confused on what to do because she is in her twenties and going through RN school. But this is my son who is a quad after a car accident 4 years ago. my son is 30 and quite depressed. She said she was sorry but seemed more concerned about her job and schooling. Please advise. She works for an agency.

Hi there,

I just asked my friend about this - he is a para T12 complete. He said you need to contact the agency to let them know what happened. 2nd degree burns are pretty serious and (God forbid) in case they get infected or something you want this on record. Has the burn been treated?

Not that it changes the problem, but where exactly did he get burnt.

yes when the day nurse came in Joe asked her to rub his shoulder because he had a muscle knot that needed rubbed out, when she put her hand back on his shoulder she felt wet and turned him to see what it was and called 911 right away. The hospital cleaned it and put him on an antibotic and cream. Today he goes to his Dr. and is running a low grade fever on top of everything else. Joe had asked the first nurse to rub it out but.... she said rice pack would ease it. Also she removed her paper work from the house.

That is truly unfortunate. Blisters are a pain in the rump. Getting good aides in the US,, or elsewhere for that matter,, is pretty tough. There just aren't any real regulations about training. BUT,, since it was through an agency,, I would suggest that it is your responsibility to let them know what happened,,, so they can, at the least,, be sure to train better.

It shouldn't affect her training in any way,, as it wasn't on purpose,, but she needs to be made aware of how serious something like this is for a quad. And how important to recognize her mistakes and do what is needed to address any harm done. It sounds as tho neither happened.

So, yes,, inform the agency. ( My opinion)

what do you mean she removed her paperwork? is she trying to deny any fault? if she was worth anything, she should of called 911 and her work. she probably broke several rules with this and probably isn't with the agency any longer. but that's not your problem.

i'm very thankful your son got treatment and i'm hoping that his fever isn't due to an infection.

please keep us posted.

i have a good friend who was being treated for stage 2 pressure wound by a home heatlh nurse. my friend trusted what this nurse said and did and ended up with MRSA and an unstageble sore that needed flap surgery. i'm not trying to scare you but your son's life is in their hands and as you see here the nurse put herself over your son's well being

The "nurses" need to fill out an incident report. The agency has the paperwork and any time an error is made it is documented in the home notes and an incident report follows. Call the agency and make a complaint. You have no grounds for a law suit unless your son is injured because of the event.

This potential RN sounds like a disaster waiting to happen if she's not going to own up to her mistakes. Hold her accountable before she hurts someone else. Let that agency know you mean business!

hope the burn is getting better. please be careful with the blisters. i burned myself on the belly about 9 days ago. i'm using an antibotic cream with silver. it seemed to be doing good untill the blisters popped. now, i'm having slight fevers. someone told me about medihoney. that sounds good too. it's fda approved and good for pressure sores. i just googled medihoney.
the agency should be informed and treat it at their expense. sometimes, you have to really speak up and remind them about issues we take for granted they should know about. PLEASE remind everyone to wash their hands even if they use gloves. just remember, we are our best defense in staying healthy.

I also advise you to get the company she works for to write it up, but also get copies for your own file; like from 911 and the people that treated him because sometimes paper work disappear and you need a paper trail for yourself because my husband got injured through an agency after his strokes, it was written up and documented, but when things got infected and extra hospitalization was needed - paper work disappeared, but I am the type to document and copy evrything concerning our health ect., so I had my own copies that I presented against the agency before they would pay for his care. I almost waited too late, not to scare you, but I agree with the others; do move on your son's behalf.

I wish you and your son well and hope his recovery is not a painful one.

Years ago if someone would have told me that nurses will make false statements in the medcal record or that they will make documents disappear to hide errors to cover their asses I wouldn't have believed you. Ever since I have been working in the health care business and then getting injured I am so disappointed and saddened at what I've seen. Actually I'm almost ashamed to be connected to such a shady, opportunistic, brazen profession that many nurses have make it into. I advise everyone to copy chart work and incident reports and anything else for your own records. You just can't trust anyone these days. Oh sure there are trustworthy nurses out there but the bad ones make it difficult for us all.
