Hi all,

just been to hospital ,200 mile round trip in the blistering heat of today and accidents at dartford tunnel adding at least an hour both ways on the journey aggravating both my temperature and temper

I went for an abdominal xray, kidney scan and mri scan, thankfully was given the all clearbut was this journey necessary? or could i have had it done at an ordinary local hospital which does'nt specialize in sci patients?

I don't know the answer,my original operation on my back was done in an ordinary hospital but my rehab in Stoke Mandeville and they have all my details'don't get me wrong,i am sure they are more 'au fait' with the condition but for the tests i think i may have been seen at my local

what are your thoughts? there maybe something i have overlooked

Hi Dom,

John has had MRI scans at BUPA, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, all are about 10 miles from our home.

He has had several kidney scans one at Rookwood Spinal Unit and Llywnapia Hospital also 10 miles from home, but all have been on different days.

Maybe, because they wanted to do them all in one go they needed to do it at the Spinal Hospital where they had the facilities there and then.

Different doctors requested John's appointments and they were done at different times, back and for over several weeks.

Otherwise, I don't know.

Any way at least the outcome was good.

Wife of an incomplete SCI - level C5/6 - accident lifting boards above his head in work caused popping sensation in his neck and this was the result. He uses a wheelchair part of the time.

Never say never, and definately do not quit, its usually worth the trying in the end.

Hi dom...

Apparently, my NS is very particular when it comes to any MRI's, or any tests specifically relating to neuro-stuff, and prefers to have them done at his facility. He's notorious for asking them to be redone until he's satisfied, and so doesn't want to put another department through that almost 300 miles away. That was for all my pre-op testing....He's probably not as particular where they're done as part of a follow-up though.

But those other periphial kinds of tests you've mentioned...I would think it would be reasonable to request that they be done locally. I know those big trips are grueling and can take days to recoup from. No sense in putting yourself through it if you don't have to.

Hi Dom,

Well my nearest spinal hospital is 1.5 hrs but I have the regular checkups you mention e.g. bladder/kidney blah done at my local hospital as there is no special equipment needed for an sci person and it's much easier as you say. Just ask at your sci appointkent to have it transferred there is no problem.
