I second the melantonin but here's a tip I just read online and darned if it didn't work for me. Play your entire day back in your head, starting from the very instant you woke up. Try to remember exactly what you did, minute by minute, move by move. Don't skip anything.

I'm guessing it's boring enough to relax you, but focused enough to give your brain something to concentrate on.

Good luck...tell us if it works!

Take up meditation and over time you will be able to turn your brain off to some degree..

Man alive - you guys are big time pill poppers! Try breathing exercises, meditation or something like Alexander Technique.

My fav is to play the Enya song Boadicea on repeat on my MP3 while taking a nice relaxing mental walk through the mountains; the song is a nice relaxing hmmmm hmmmm hmmm & putting in details like the colorful butterflies & birds & imagining even the scents of the grasses (no not THAT grass....that was earlier) & flowers swaying in the breeze helps the mind "have something to do".....so long as I'm not having too much pins & needles/bugs crawling sensation that is.

HAPPY SLEEPING!

Try to get into a good relaxing/sleeping routine and maintain a set time at night where you start unwinding & stop thinking. If you train your body to follow the guidelines you provide for it it should eventually learn when it's time to sleep, this includes trying to have regular waking times to help in the process. Establishing a good sleeping/waking routine is part of the battle to being able to sleep more consistently.

Eating snacks at night can help calm you down as your circulation will be working on digesting and producing happy hormones (from carbohydrates being digested serotonin will be released in the brain) which will make you sleep better.

Lavender oil can be extremely relaxing - maybe you could get someone to rub some on for you - even if on a ventilator you don't have to inhale it to get the benefits as it will be taken in through your skin to relax you. i sometimes use it to relax me at night and it works wonders.

Anything else that helps relax you like calming music, darker environment can help signal to your body it is bed time, reading a book til you feel drowsy (if you can) will help sedate your mind.

Try to work your mind during the day to tire it out a bit mentally - if you start mentally stimulating yourself more during the day encouraging the 'on mechanism' should assist with turning off at night time. Find activities to do during the day which will make you mentally tired.

Other than that is there anything that you can identify that is going on which may be causing you to wake up? If so make sure you look into it and address it appropriately.

Believe it or not herbal Nytol works well for me to relax the brain and lets yu drift off. Assuming no pain etc I agree with Wheeleibear a bit on Enya can also be very soothing.

.i used to use it pre SCi now unfortunately I'm such a mess fpf fatigue and pain that I need to use some much stronger stuff.
