Hi my names Janie, I need some feedback on wheather or not to switch from indwelling cathiter to a super pubic. I'm a T 9-12 complete, comin up on five years paralized. I live with constant UTI"s. I am so sick of them. My Uroligist wants me to switch to a super pubic. I don't want more holes or problems. I''m wondering if its worth it or not. Can you help me by sharing your experience? Thanks a million!

I'm sorry I can't give you an opinion because I haven't done much research but, the correct spelling is supra pubic. I would try going to YouTube and see what you can find. Good luck!

I'm really interested in this thread. I currently have indwelling catheter, but now on UTI number 7 since Mar 2011.

I have done a little research and asked the knowledgeable guys on here for their advice. I am waiting to go back to urologist and I am defiantely going to go for a supra pubic. Like you, I have had enough of UTI's.

Somebody else will be along shortly I am sure to offer you some advice too.

I'd say go for it, it's a lot easier to manage than an indwelling long term although as the principle is the same you may not see a great reduction in uti's - I've had one since I was 3 months post - now 8 yrs and had two or three uti's in 8 yrs.

Hello Janie,

For females, the indwelling foley in the urethra can cause many problems later. The supra pubic catheter insertion is reversibe if you decide against it. You may want to ask your urologist about a Mitrofanoff surgery where you would be able to intermittent cath through your navel.

Good luck.

PS: I have a good friend who just came back from Rogers, Arkansas visiting his mother. Close by?

I only had a indwelling one for a short time so I don't know how they compare, but I have been happy with my supra pubic for the last 4 years.

I still get uti's from time to time but they say that comes with any cath.

They are easy to change and its easy to flush them if needed.

I have found that the silicone one work best for me, there is less iritation around the stoma, but it wasn't a big problem with the laytex ones.

It's supposed to be easy to undo if you don't like it.

Ive had an SP cath for about 3years, I swear by it. I cant do a reg folley cath bc 1.its dirty 2. it gets in the way from having sex 3. I had more UTI"S
I usually have to keep a drain sponge around insertion site to absorb drainage that happens. But its not bad. I have the option of plugging it but usually just use leg bag. My bf changes the cath every mth or when it needs it, it just drains more. I could'nt imagine having an indwelling cath again. I vot SP all the way!

a word of advice get yourself a flip/flow clamp system on your cath so u can fill your bladder up to keep the elastisaty in your bladder wall
other wise it will shivel up like mine did now im having to streach it again it got down to a walnut size and i could only hold 30 mls

trust me on this it will stop blockages, infection and it will keep the bladder in good condition

first few months of injury i was getting cathed 4 or 5 times a day. i went to urologist for a check up & he suggested a supra pubic, because i cant cath myself & finding someone there at all times was impossible. at first i didnt want to do because like you,, i didnt want ani more holes, but i'm glad i did. only time i have to be inconvenienced w/ cathing, is to drain the bag. be sure to drink enough water to keep the uti's down. i've had mine about 12 1/2 years
