Hey does anyone have any suggestions on which type of mattress I could get. My fiance was injured in January and will be coming home from the hospital soon and I can't seem to figure out which is the best mattress to care for his skin. We want to be able to share a bed so we weren't looking into having a hospital bed in our apartment. I read a lot about tempurpedic beds but his therapists say not to get one as they are too hard to get out of and transfer from but online it seems to be the choice bed to purchase. I ordered a sleep number but it was just delivered and it is not very comfortable at all and I'm really not that happy with it. I was going to wait to return it until he has a chance to test it out and see how it works for him since that's all I'm really concerned about at the moment.
Anyways, any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Is a regular mattress with a pillowtop the way to go? Are tempurpedics or some other form of memory foam that difficult to get out of? He has all triceps in one arm and partial triceps in his other arm. He's still pretty recent after injury and is still working to build up his muscle so he still needs assistance getting in and out of bed and things like that. My main concern is his skin though, he already had to get a skin flap transfer as he got a stage 4 pressure ulcer while in ICU so that's my main concern.
Thanks for your help!

I too recommend the tempurpedic (or other memory foam mattress) as does my Rehab Doctor. I've been sleeping on it as a para for nigh on 18 months now. No skin breakdown, keeps me warm, and i can sleep next to my wife. I don't roll or otherwise change my sleeping position during the night.

Tempurpedic all the way. 21 years and no pressure sores. As a bonus, husband had one for fifteen years, when I pulled off the cover to wash it I noticed there were several cracks in the foam and places where smallish pieces had broken loose. We contacted Tempurpedic, submitted the required paperwork and pictures and within eight weeks had a brand new mattress and box springs. Awesome product and company. My husband does not transfer from bed to his chair, but he has no problem easily transferring from chair to bed, and has had no problem sinking in.

My wife and I have been using a tempurpedic for over a year now, twin rotec hospital beds so its like having a king. biggest problem is heat retention, if your a warm person the mattress is often too hot. They are quite difficult to transfer out of however I'm a big guy and can sleep 6 or more hours in one position without an issue with pressure sores.
