Nerve pain:
I'm being stabbed by 100 knives, stung by a million bees, squashed to death by a tight vice around the chest, feel ants crawling under me skin, burnt to death, froze to death

As if nerve pain was not enough in itself, we add to the physical pain with mental imagery worthy of the worse horror torture movies ever.

What do I do?
When I get stabbing pains I think 'ooo I am at a concert, me legs have fell asleep and I got a load of drag queens kicking the high kicks stabbing me with their stiletto heels to wake the leg up...oo I had better change me position'. This way the seriousnes of pain is reduced: the impacts of anxiety, tension, fear and stress on the body less.

'ooo Miss Cloud, Its impossible, how ridiculous' - if thats the case why put on music, a comedy, a documentary to distract your mind from pain - may as well put on 'death by torture' type films 24 hours a day - because thats the films your playing in your own head?
Thats me question, you yourself tell you your own answer.

Miss cloud
Lived with giant disc herniation, slowly squashing the cord for 2 years undiagnosed - on paracetamol.
Tough and hard. And medically trained. No.
No choice and a survivor. Yes.

Coping skills learnt be a Hypnotherapist - he took early retirement from being a top Consultant in Anaesthetics/Pain Management, this is me interpretation of what I learnt

I've been tricking my brain out of pain for more than 20 years. Of course, it doesn't always work, but it helps. I pretend that extreme pain is extreme pleasure, and in the midst of holding my breath from the pain, I get light headed which also seems to slow down the nerve pain as it hits. As for movies with torture, I have trouble watching them because the same way I trick my pain from hurting, my brain sees the injuries on the screen and actually gives me the sensation of said pain. How much brain knows what a bear trap to the ankle or a stab wound to the face or groin feels like, I don't know, but I feel it every time. lol

Hi scott,

Hey thanks for posting and adding weight to me theory. As a respected 20 years under ya belt, this means a lot to me, thank you :)

People into s and m associate pain with pleasure - me version is a more fluffed up version of s and m. More Sweet and Mellow

Holding the breathe...oooo I do this naturally, and the medics say 'breathe, breathe' and I say 'ohh yeah I forget to do that', now you have just explained why...ooooo and I thought it was a bad idea :Birthday_Song:

hi pinkcloud
i find distraction is the key to nerve pain. The last few nights i've had really bad nerve pain to the extent i was sweating really heavily and grunting!! Sorry not a good image but true. When the pain hits its like a million red ants biting all at once and usually my toes decide to dance as well!! Toe spasms are hell!! I found i have to get out of bed and start to walk around and watch telly at the same time - food network is quite a good distraction thou it makes me hungry - If i can't walk due to toe spasms and can't get to tv i put meatloaf bat out of hell on the mp3 plug me in and amp up the sound. beats sitting in bed screaming and its easier on the neighbours ears!! love esslouis

I just thought of a term for the pain reduction I get when my breath is held and the dizziness kicks in. Auto-Neuralgic Asphyxiation.

Concerning both chronic and acute pain I use mental distraction, muscle relaxation techniques, visualazation, deep breathing, thermal and hydro-therepy, meditation, stretching and some medication....actually, everything but tie a short rope around my neck and jump from a high place....that's next I guess....But, I don't think I will hold my breath until I get woozy...

I wonder what doctors will say if i describe me pains in a non-negative way, dont think they'd understand too well, a smile in pain confusing them enough, bless their hearts.

EsslouisYeap you got the distraction thing going on well sorted me thinks :emoticon-0165-muscle: hows about the next stage up....re-visualising them ants for something more attractive say..'when i get stinging pains, it means that meatloaf is sticking a load of pins in me and is going to sing me 5 albums as he takes them out again' And you will scream along to his songs with him (on cd but who cares lol), and see who can sing/scream the loudest :specool:

hi scott
I aint got time to google yet do I guess its a game that the lead singer of inxs played....I didnt like to say nothing incase it gave some people spicey ideas and they told their wives 'pink cloud told me to do it' and I got hate mail from wives

Snake eye
yeah fo me it aint a great idea, stops them muscles getting oxygen and all that..I think me mind must have a kinky twist in it somewhere, as I never even knew I flipping did it - mind you for me it didnt feel any pleasure, so me romantic side must dominate the 1% kinky side (only there because as a little girl I loved aerosmith and never could understand why he wore tight trousers and kept his tongue out - (I thought he like horse riding judphours like me and stuck out his tongue to be silly to the cameras)

breathe, breathe much better :bbq:

I should explain that I don't hold my breath to kill the pain, the pain at times is so great that I just stop breathing regularly for a short time and the dizziness follows. However, I do practice breath holding to strengthen my lungs and increased lung capacity, but this is done for therapeutic reasons and to kill time when bored.

Lol, I understood what you meant scott, some wheelie-chair devos might not though so good to put up an explanation  , i think for them we just put the excitement out of our post :emoticon-0165-muscle: - it sure is a real valuable ability to strengthen the lungs - why we forget to breathe - no idea. No ones told me. It cant be that dangerous as I'm not dead -

But its just dawned on me - when pain reaches its peak, I hallucinate and pass out. Then drop sleep without warning. This happens when I have an intense massage onto extreme spasmed parts and calcified deposits in me shoulder - I hear a loud 'pop' and it REALLY REALLY ******** hurts - then bang - I pass out. Strange.....yet true sci = Strange Crazy Incidents :)

holding your breath is really bad for pain...it creates tension and cycles with more pain...etc.

For me....The best way to naturally reduce pain is mental immersion. It is important to find the happy place and the comfortable position when you are not in pain. The position or place should be easy to achieve...(I have 2 positions public and private) I have a few mental vacation spots. Work on getting in them or calling them to mind before a pain attack hits. Find a comfortable place mentally, a comfortable position physically and when you feel the pain start go there or do the best you can to find that spot mentally and physically. Oddly I learned that in a book years ago. It's served me well and still does. Take a deep breath with the wave of pain then let it out and try to imagine the pain leaving with the release of breath. I find waves especially helpful.

I go several places but my favorite is...Manhattan Beach....I focus on that one guy way out riding the wave.....I concentrate on the sound of the surf and the gulls...then the wind.

When the pain starts I think of the color blue, pull up the sounds and smells and go from there.

Laughter through pain, though insane also helps. :)

If an idiot speaks in an empty room, do they still sound dumb??
