Hi I'm newly home from the hospital. I've been catheterizing into the toilet since I've been home. In the hospital I noticed I'd lay on my back in the bed and catheterize into a urinal while lying on my back, it would take me a lot of internal pushing and maybe 5 minutes and I'd be able to squeeze around 350 mL out. Now that I'm at home I only pee into the toilet and I notice that I don't pee for nearly the same amount of time, I'm scared that I may be retaining urine or something. Not being a urologist, here is my question: Can people void out the same amount sitting on the toilet as they can lying on their back? Should I continue to pee laying on my back to make sure I get every last drop out?

Thanks

Chances are, because you're sitting up you're putting more pressure on your bladder, hence pee faster. If you're really concerned, you could measure it while you're up too be sure it's around the same amount, and it wouldn't hurt to try again when you're laying down just to be certian.

Hospitals have a measure cup thingy that fits in your toilet. Get one and measure to put your mind at rest. You can get a bedside commode chair maybe from your local charity and measure what is in the bucket.

Male L damaged

When at home - I'm not always fully dressed - down girls
When at home - I urinate into a 2L measuring bowl from my wheelchair
This tells me the color, desity, mucus, volume, smell
All of which helps to diagnose a bladder infection
SIC = 9am, 3pm, 6pm, 11pm and mostly during the night
I had a Clam Operation on my bladder, capasity 1 to 1.5L, Try to maintain 750cc to 1L

We are all differant - this is me

Hi Steven
You probably need to ask your doctor about this. We are all different, it seems. You and I are injured at the same level. When cathetering, others on this site have mentioned having to push the urine out. That isn't my experience. Once the catheter is through the spincter, for me, the urine just flows on its own and I am quite sure empties my bladder.

I was paralyzed 6.5 years ago. Since then, I have started to urinate. When I feel the need, I have about 30 seconds. I have to urinate every 2 hours (approximately) day and night. I catheter if I am going to leave the house to give me more time before the next pee AND to completely empty my bladder at least once a day. I always pee or catheter into a hand held urinal so that I can see how much, what color, smell, etc.

Good luck on this one. I find that not-walking is easier to deal with than the pee-thing.

Help, a new problem just developed from last night to today for me =( Now I am peeing every 10 minutes down my leg. I have been peeing myself all day, this really stinks. If I cath, I get about 30 minutes before I pee myself again. I just had an accident not to long ago and I cathed right afterwards and found 200 mL still in my bladder. This sucks. I can't believe I'm peeing myself so much what do I do? I called my doctor and the secretary said she'd be telling him in the morning but I need help now =(

What over the counter meds will stop my bladder from going every 10 minutes?

Steven
It really sounds to me like you have a bladder infection. I am not sure there is anything you can get to help it except antibiotics. Keep emptying your bladder as well as you can so that the urine doesn't back up to your kidneys. It sounds like you leak when your bladder gets full - inconvenient but at least it's coming out.

My experience is that any time I had a change in my pee routine, it was due to an infection. I would otherwise feel quite well.

Good luck.

If it's not an infection, consider taking Oxybutynin/Ditropan for bladder spasms (you'll need a prescription for that). That might help you out a bit.

I've also found that avoiding caffeine is a good way to reduce incontinence. I avoid coffee, and black and green tea. Red tea is alright because it's caffeine free. While most herbal teas are okay, avoid camomile tea, which is a diuretic. I also have problems when I drink things like peppermint tea and acidic drinks like cranberry juice. I used to avoid oranges and grapefruit, but they don't bother me that much anymore. Also, alcohol can be a diuretic.

If none of that helps, consider botox injections. I've been getting them every six months for the last 4 years or so and they've helped a lot.

Good luck!

How do you diagnose and treat a bladder infection? I don't have insurance and can't afford a 100 dollar doctor bill every time i suspect an infection. Thanks all for your help so far

If your urine is dark and/or cloudy with a really strong odor. Also, you may have a low grade temp and generally feel like crap. If you suspect an infection, call your doc's office and ask for a prescription for one of Meijer's free antibiotics.

As for your original question, I used to measure my output (which I think is a good practices for newbies). No matter how regimented I was with my fluid intake, my output volumes always fluctuated. Seriously, even the weather can change your output. Like ZEN12many, I just put the cath in until I reach the bladder. Gravity and pressure do the rest. However, some days I have trouble getting the sphincter to open, and I'm wondering if this is the problem you might be having (based on the fact that you have to push). Put the cath in until urine starts out on its own, or the cath seems to hit a wall. Hold the cath in with firm pressure for a few seconds (10-20), then relax and try to slide it in again. Keep doing that until you get urine coming out on it's own.

go down to the local drug market and look for urine test strips. there easy to use and fairly cheep. You might be able to get thrm from the doctor for free. they tell you alot of info. look them up under google and and it will tell you which markers to look at for an uti. if you dont mind what what type of caths are you using?? do you reuse them or a one time then throw away thing?
ill try helping as much as possible.

Hello Stephen,

All the advice here is excellent. One thing I found otc that works great is Vetericyn VF. I inject it (20 ml) into my bladder three times a week and have been uti free for the first time (a whole year) in 43 years. You can get it through your veterinarian or order from many places online. I use Medi-Vet in Louisiana for the best price and free shipping. It'll cost you about $32.00 for 16 oz. bottle.

Good luck.

I usually notice when I have more spasms and the color of the urine gets real dark.

Excessive exercise of any kind, including spasms, will lead to some muscle breakdown which will be excreted as proteins in the urine turning it a brown color.

Voiding laying down is easier and more effective then while seated, reasoning (from a layman's viewpoint) While seated you are applying pressure to the prostate gland, this can restrict urine flow and sphincter reaction to a cath. This applies to able bodied as well, that's the reason the majority of long haul truckers sit on a cushion, reduces retention. Lying down is not possible in a lot of social situations, so I may suggest attempting the Credes' method, which involves the pressing or preferably 'tapping' the bladder, this increases bladder tone for more efficient emptying. Hope this helps
