I've recently had a dexa scan which has pointed out failings in my bone density, no surprise really with 29 years being a complete injury.
Has anyone else had this done and if creaky like me, what medication was suggested? (biophosphates, Vit D & calcium)
How has it gone and with side effects etc?
Look forward to any feedback.
Thanks!

I had been using FosaMax for loss of bone density. My orthopaedic surgeon ordered a two year treatment of Forteo. I injected myself every night for two years. After another DEXA scan, it showed all bone density had increased with only a small spot on my right hip still weak.
I hope this helps.

I also had a bone density test done. I'm 8 yrs in to my injury and 36 yrs old. I was surprised at my loss. The drs put me on a medication that I take once a week and vitamin D twice a day. I don't have anyy side effects as long as I eat with the vitamin.
Life is one long insane trip. Some people just have better directions.

Thanks for your feedback Millard and cdngrl. Millard you are always a help thanks! I'm just nervous at all the pills and injections they are giving me at the moment. I've had to start an oestrogen suppressant (for another non sci health issue) which will push me through the change and reduce my bone density. Hence a dexa scan to give me a starting position which wasn't good.
Not seen you around for a while cdngrl - hope you'll come back - did you get those bladder/cath issues sorted?

IzziWhizzi, I am on bisphosphonates, and other than being difficult to fit in with all of my other treatments and meds I had no problems, my last dexascan showed more deterioration. I will probably be started on the next level of treatment when I see my consultant in a couple of weeks, I am also only 34, but the osteoporosis has been caused by my other treatments.

Hi Jules
Hope you are feeling comfy - that oromorph makes you feel very stupid and very poorly, so don't over do it please.
They've put me on twice daily vit d and calcium lemon flavoured tablets - like chewing on a lemony chalk (hubby thinks its funny to offer me cheeses at same time), and also a weekly alandronic acid tablet.
Take care of yourself
