I have been a paraplegic for 44 years. I may have a bone fracture in my kneecap. So far Xrays don't indicate a fracture but it'd been 2 weeks and the swelling is not getting any better.
What I need to know from friends and folks on this forum, What's the chances of healing this ? I can't imagine trying to imobilize my leg with a caat or whatever long enough to heal this. I have terrible leg spasms and my skin breakdown could be bad in a cast. I'm truly considering having my leg taken off just above the knee if they can't give me some kind of time frame on healing this leg. I can see this happening more and more the older I get and truly folks don't really use my leg...lol If someone has been through this please let me know I'm tired of the cold sweats and spasms and I want to get back to enjoying my summer fishing and traveling !

I broke my left kneecap in 2004. I had surgery on it the next day. I wasn't in a cast but used an immobilizer. The kneecap was exposed using this device. I used this about four weeks and took it off. About 3 months later I had surgery again to remove the hardware from the kneecap. All is well since then.

I had a para friend that had a leg removed because of circulation. He said it affected his pushing his chair as the center of gravity changed. He also said it made transferring more difficult.

Good luck on any decision.

I just read your post about a fx in the kneecap. Sorry it's kinda late but I just found this site.
I just got through 8 weeks in a cast for a severely fractured tibia. It was very painful and a major pain in the ass. I have had many fractures in the 30 yrs. All of them in my legs. They all healed but the way they healed ain't gonna win me any beauty contests. I am pretty active and not always as careful as I should be, so that explains all the time in a cast or splint.
I hope to God you didn't have you leg removed. I have a buddy that is a T-12 para and he somehow got the bursa bacteria after a surgery. His leg was removed at the hip. He tells me that is severely changed the way he sits, transfers, and rolls. He also told me something I found interesting, he told me that he noticed that women treated him much more different than just being 'plegic, but that's on them bitches!!!

I pray that you have healed and you are getting on with trying to bust the other one. J/King, of course.
Later, RioBlaze
