I looking for some advise on what people do about their bowel program while they are camping. I am about to go on a month long road trip and need some ideas. One idea that I have is taking the nylon piece off my chair that the cushion sits on. From there replacing it with plastic that is cut out like a toilet seat. Then all I would need is to make a cushion to sit on while Im doing my thing. This seems to be the easiest and most simplistic idea I can come up with. I would like to avoid having to bring to much as this is my first step to getting back to back country camping where lighter is better. I cant wait to hear some ideas.

What about guidos travel shower seat - fully padded

http://disabledgear....om/P100007.aspx

Or a folding camping seat - hole cut in the base - and then a padded toilet ring - also on his site

I doubt you'll want to cut a hole in a seat and change it every toilet session.

However in the days before shower chairs I used an old everest and jennings with a padded toilet ring.

Wow! I consider myself in pretty good shape SCI-wise, and I don't think I would start out with 10 days of back country camping. I have camped a few times since SCI and I went to State Parks with flush toilets and for only four or five days at first. Even at State Parks, it was difficult.

I don't think I would cut up my chair.

Sorry I don't have any good advice. Good luck and do report back how it went.

I remember a guy making a post about how he cut a plastic piece to fit his chair, pretty much the same as you are talking about and he said it worked great. I don't think he used any cushion but I don't think it would be hard to make one, a little foam and some kind of washable cover.

Hi Joesstone

Just wondered, what will YOU be sleeping on while camping? It may involve a lot of spasms!

Well the intial plan was to get an Exped sleeping pad. These are top of the line down and air sleeping pads that can be as thick as 3.5 inches. You wont feel the ground and they are pretty good for preasure relieve. But I couldnt get one sponsored to me for this ride so I decided to save money and use a air mattress. We will only be doing car camping for this trip so weight and size will not be an issue. Before I try back country camping again I will need the Exped for sure. Love the exped site - thanks!

By a camping chair to go the loo on I meant one of those cheap fold ones such as

http://www.gooutdoor.../camping-chairs

cut a hole in it and use an inflatable toilet seat and a bucket!!

I'm a complete tetra and camp without shower or toilet facilities - 4 weeks this summer. I go with hubby and my 2 primary school age kids in a pop up 4 man tent.

I put a foam mattress on this

http://www.gooutdoor...ing-bed-p143627

as I find an air mattress not good enough for 8 hours without turning.

Our pop up tent is this:

its fab - 2 minutes up and ten minutes down.

Good luck

I xx

As far as matrersses go. I have found an amazing answer to sleeping more comfortably than i do in my own bed.
There is a company called ALPKIT. They are a uk based internet company and lovely to deal with. They have a range of sleep air materesses from the very light and thin to the really thick. I have the next to thickest one and its great but they go bigger, aslo they dont cost the earth.

Wild camping wise I have a lightweight folding canvas camping chair for sitting about in gardens. I have a hole cut in the seat. Dig a hole, put the chair on top, and do the business.

Hey Joe, the previous posters had some good ideas. I'll be following your progress on your blog. I hope you'll be updating that. Next week, I'm going for some fishing and kayaking. We won't be camping this time since navigating the tent is still a bit hard for me. However, I'm planning to try the terrain at the campsites on the flowage that we go to. If that goes well, I'm hoping to get back into island camping soon. Just can't let the outdoors go!

Thanks everyone for all the helpfull advise. I still am amazed at how much support there is on this forum. I am now on my journey back to Montana. I have now been camping for about 7 days without a bathroom. I have come up with a cheap and simple solution for bowel issues. I will be posting on my blog about the modification I have made for this trip. Hopefully my ideas will help others. Thanks again. joesstone.blogspot.com

Best of luck, Joe. I will be following your blog.

I can't decide between air mattress or cot with a pad. We should have access to both through family. So we'll set them up ahead of time and check skin.

This thread is an encouragement. We used to camp a ton as a family. We took our first daughter before she was 6 weeks old. But we've been hesitant to try camping since my accident. We just might try in Oct. We did fishing in July but we stayed in a cabin at hubby insistance I'm actually glad. I just can't do all day in the heat. I had to retreat to a climat controlled room a couple of times a day. But I'm a crazy quad who does better in cold than heat. So I should do better in Oct.

One of biggest problems we've tried how to get me in the tent. I can't just roll up to the tent and transfer. So I think we will use a portable sling and just have someone help DH carry me in. Using the sling we could also get me in the boat if I was brave enough to do a boat with a trache.

What I really want is a modified toy hauler or even a nice teardrop trailer. But for now I'll settle on a tent. I just want to get back to camping.

I am going to show hubby this thread when he gets home. I'm excited so are the kids. While the cabin was nice, they really wanted to camp in a tent.
