Hey everyone,
My son is a T6 complete of 2 1/2 years. After many many bladder leaks he was referred for Botox. This worked quite well for 4 months the first time and 5 mths the next. But his following 2 lots of botox have worn off after roughly a month. We were just wondering if anyone on here has had a different procedure done to help with leaks. He is talking about getting an indwelliing cath back in just to have some peace from the accidents. Any help would be great.

As someone who has an indwelling catheter, I really would not recommend it.. It is giving me such problems with infections! As a male, he could maybe wear condom caths between catheterizations???

Has he tried the oxybutanin tablets or something similar? On the very extreme side, my bladder spasms stopped after having bladder augmentation..

Wish you all the best as I know these problems can be VERY frustrating..

Carberry! I am, or could be on the same boat as your son. Does he take any meds for his bladder? I would exhaust the list there is out there! And ask the urologist about the different batches of botox out there, I have tried 2 and will trying a 3rd type next time I go in, as my bladder is building up a tolerance. The other extreme options that are available are as Smiley mentioned Bladder Augmentation where they enlarge the bladder by using a apart of your bowel, and also Sacral Stimulation was suggested to me but they were unsure if this would prove successful in SCI patients. I would try avoiding the indwelling at all costs as this will lead to infections in the bladder and as I well know UTI's increase spasticity.

Everything will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end!

Thanks for the replies, yes he has tried all the different tablets to help stop his bladder spasming with no success. He really doesn't want to go back to the indwelling but he can't cope with the accidents. It really gets him down and we will really try to stay away from having to put it back in. And like Doodle has said, his spasms are bad enough without UTI's causing them to be worse.

Ma'am, I'd suggest Smiley's route of condom catheters over the indwelling. He might have to experiment with different sizes and adhesion methods, but he can still ISC as needed while avoiding those accidents, which can do a great deal more harm. There are a variety of very discreet urine bags as well for the between ISC times, however if meds have been exhausted and Botox is failing, it's time to look "outside" for a solution.

Check out www.coloplast.com to get samples and suggestions; they're the best company I've dealt with in years for SCI bladder issues (as a nurse).

Good luck, and let us know if you have any other questions.
