The Office for Disability Issues (ODI) is a UK cross-government organisation that works with government departments, disabled people and a wide rangeof external groups. The ODI leads the government's vision of achieving equalityfor disabled people.
The ODI works collaboratively with government departments to make sure the needs of disabled people are reflected in the governments work and its own projects. It provides strategic advice and analysis; we share tools and developskills among government staff.
Key to its work is engaging with disabled people, disability organisations and service users, and believe that those affected by a service or policy should be involved in designing it. This co-production approach adds value towork across government and leads to innovative and practical solutions.
My role will be to actively promote the role and value of Disabled People's User Led Organisations (DPULOs) to a variety of stakeholders across my local region. As an Ambassador I will also facilitate closer working between DPULOs and support DPULOs to make successful applications to the programme's Facilitation Fund.
The Ambassadors will be independent of government and work with and report directly to the National Lead, who will be seconded to the Office for Disability Issuesfrom a DPULO.
This is a really exciting opportunity to help promote the equality of DisabledPeople in England.
If you are interested you can find out more here... http://odi.dwp.gov.u...ganisations.php
Any of you who are involved in User Led Organisation in the UK who want to find out more then PM me and I will put you in touch with your local ambassador.

Just out of interest, have you got any examples of existing DPULOs that meet the requirements listed in the linked documents ie that are led and controlled by disabled people and have a minimum membership of 75% of disabled people on their board and have 50% of volunteers who are disabled?

See, GB, this is why they did not approach YOU to be an Ambassador. i would say it is obvious that Tom speaks pretty good Acronym, and I expect it is a requirement for the job.
Quite seriously, Their selection of Tom increases my respect for the process a LOT. Congratulations, our own Tinbasher.

Ah Greybeard you old cynic!
There are a few GB but as you imply not near enough and this will be part of the role. The Spinal Inuries Association would be a national example and most (not all) Local Centres for Independent Living are.
Of course being run by disabled people doesn't prevent some of them being run like dictatorships!

Another obvious one, related to our particular area of disability, would be EC's favourite, the Backup Trust

I am not sure about the Backup Trust being User Led by that definition I am happy to be corrected though.

I appreciate your good wishes I suspect you know the field as well as I do, but I gotta bash something
We are entering a very difficult time in the UK for disabled people, we stand to lose a great deal of what we fought for over the last 20 years or so. If we don't (cannot?) stand together to fight it we will lose it all. Perhaps unthinkable coalitions require unthinkable coalitions to fight them.
The important part of this job is getting the real voice of disabled people to the ear of the politctians and descision makers. Not the big charities or think tanks or the medically modelled organisations that claim to speak for disabled people.
Maybe I will get down your way and we can have a joint grump
