A crate or something on your lap? Like a Wal-Mart basket? Anything that will sit squarely on your legs and then you can load your different bags into them will ride in much better than lots of loose things. Be careful about hanging too much on the back of your chair - it makes you tip heavy and changes your center of gravity - just a warning! Been there done that!

The crate sounds like a good option. Only thing is, I have to go across a few bumps from my car getting in to the building. Knowing my luck, the crate would bounce off my legs.
I was thinking about having something on the back of my chair, but as my new chair doesn't have push handles, it would be difficult. I really wouldn't want to scare the staff in the building with a flash of my knickers if my chair tipped up. I can just imagine me laying on my back with my legs in the air.

I just use a regular backpack. I got someone with a sewing machine to re-sew the straps so that they're like two loops in the top corners. Unless the backpack is really heavy or full, it's easy to take on and off whenever I want to get something out of it. Something I'd like to try in the future is a backpack from wheelchairgear.com.
Yes, I've been looking at backpacks, but it would have to sit in front of me. I suppose I could just put it on backwards.
