Feeling Cold But Sweating Like Hell

I always feel my hands and head are cold. However, when I put on something to keep warm, my head, neck and back will sweat like hell while still feeling my hands are cold. Sometimes I even cannot tell if I feel cold or hot in such situation. In spring and autumn I feel extremely bad and my shirt gets wet by sweat every day. Anyone has the same experience?

I did and it turned out to be my feet, stopped them being pointy n the cold sweats stopped...

I am 2 years post and I have found with my body sweating like that and not being able to put on additional clothes like that its a UTI. Have you noticed what your body does to let you know you have some type of infection?

Ever sense my wreck from my injury level down sweets if it is the slightest bit warm, and I'm a t12. So my lower back and legs will to the touch fill cool but will still be wet. Anyway my doc says its because of the nerve damage. Your temperature gauge in your body thinks its hot when its not, so its trying to cool its self off by sweating. I try all kind of drugs to try and stop it but all of the side effects were just as bad. So, after a while you will learn to live with it and just remember, keep a extra par of clothes with you.

I have a similar problem of sweating and feeling cold at the same time. My doctor prescribed me Oxybutynin (aka Ditropan). The medication is actually for bladder issues, but one of the side effects is that it reduces the amount you sweat. I've been taking Oxybutynin for 11 years and it works great!

I have been devouring oxybutynin for 28yrs to stop the 'quad sweats' as I call them because there isn't anything wrong with me such as toe nails digging in, or UTI's for examples. After a topic was brought up not long ago re sweating, I read & found side effects from oxy that I was putting down to my valium intake (which have similar effects) or on occasion, my diet.

But agreed that it stops sweating, especially if taken in conjunction with THC.

Side Effects:
Blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry eyes, nose skin or mouth; headache, indigestion, nausea, stomach pain, taste changes, trouble sleeping, rash, hives, itching, difficulty swallowing or breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue, confusion, difficult or painful urination, fast or irregular heartbeat, fever, hallucinations, mental or mood changes, seizures, swelling of the hands, ankles or feet.

Mycroft, I realize you are a paraplegic which only thickens the plot. If you put more clothing on you will get warmer IF you cover your body in it's entirety (head to toe) which is doable in bed, under the covers, but realistically not viable for everyday living...so after all of 5mins on google, I found sage to be the natural way to go...drinks (tea or smoothies) or put in or on your food. I'd rather be sweaty than deal with those side effects :)

Sounds like the same symptoms you get with "autonomic dysreflexia". Does anything seem to make it better or worse that would be a stimulant? (Positioning, shoes versus no shoes, sitting versus lying down, etc.)

I wish I could tell you Scott...The sage plants I brought are only 10cm in height so far but getting well established in our summer heat. I will post for sure when I've given them a descent trial.

I'm a 33 male Quad C3-4 complete on a vent injured in car wreck 17 years ago. What do I need to tell the doctor to get me a prescription for oxybutynin for the sweating?
I use to not sweat or it wasn't enough to bother me but if I can recall within the past 2 - 3 years it's gotten significantly worse. Does anybody have any ideas for something to try?

there are postural sweats, nothing to do with heat and sweats from pressure somewhere. i find if i sweat on my left face/neck, its my right foot or toes or more importantly maybe by sitting area on right buttock. its opposite for sweat on my right side obviously. i had postural sweats for years post injury. i too feel the cold as am cold blooded due to injury level at c4.

I've done some trials, and it could be my cushion.
I use a Jay cushion, always the same for about 3 years.
yesterday I went in a friend's car and sitting on a soft front seat I didn't sweat (the softness of the car seat would explain why I don't sweat in bed as well).
Today I went out with a different wheelchair (even if it's old and much less confortable) and a different cushion and I sweat just a little bit for the first few minutes sitting.
I hope I found out the solution...

My sweats usually happen when i have use the bathroom or something putting pressure on some part of my body.Last month i was hospitilized for a uti and now im having baddd sweats and a hard time urinating while in bed my urologist and primary dr. have no clue as to whats going on i have an appointment to a nueroligist later this month...

I've been dealing with the overbothersome to me sweat issue more in the past month than in the entire time since my initial injury in October of 2008. I have been experiencing some horrible high pain days recently and the sweats are all the worse the higher my pain levels go. With my sweat issue I am also dealing with more intense headaches, muscle spasms throughout my entire body, feeling terribly cold even though sweating enough to soak clothing. When my pain levels go up I experience more nausea thus I don't eat as much, I wind up becomming dizzy and light-headed, even disoriented at times, difficulty concentrating and understanding... all this totally frustrates me and I'm still searching for answers to help get back on a better track again here. My sleep/ wake pattern has been thrown totally out of schedule for me, I'll try to sleep and the pain doesn't allow me to rest. I had taken Lyrica and neurontin previously but stopped them both due to side effects that were worse than dealing with the pain and sweat issues. Right now I have a sensation across the back of my head, top of my neck feeling similar to being kicked or hit in that area. How I wish there was some magical way to simply just make it all go away and be able to live issue free peacefully....

I only sweat when I have something wrong like last year when I broke my knee cap. Well now I'm having abdominal spasms and when I spasm I get these horrid cold sweats. Has anyone ever had this problem ?

Hi again Scott, forgive me for not seeing nor replying to your post before now. I have used both propantheline & oxybutynin (ditropan) for bladder spasm & sweating, for 28yrs with great results.

Re the sage-I couldn't study it's effects efficiently, as I'm going through early menopause. Interestingly, I'm sweating in the usual places rather than the V shape from head & shoulder area. I've never had to use anti-perspirant until recently, not something you'll have to worry about. :specool:

I'd imagine you'd have to consume ALOT of sage (as tasteful as it is) to conquer our sweats, but give it a go. Stacked with oxybutynin, it would cut down on oxy intake I'd hope. I've said on another sweating thread that I stack oxy & marijuana, My choice of herb because of it's instant relief & need only very little to activate the oxy.

Good luck finding what suits you, & post your findings? Our SCI bods never cease to fascinate the heck out of me. :yikes:
