im a 36 yrs old quadriplegic c-6 complete injury.i had a baclofen pump installed 2 and 1/2 yrs ago duev to severe spasticity in my legs and abdomen.6weeks ago i went to refill it and while refilling it,not after i fell into a coma for 3 days, after that i started hellucinating for another 3 days due to high fever(41c) and overdose of baclofen(my dr. says i had an allergic reaction to baclofen,(the resident who refilled my pump is inexperienced, thats his 3rd or 4th time refilling a pump).anyways my neurologist put me off baclofen oral and intrathecal. instead he prescribed antidepressents zeprexa and cymbalta. i spent about 3 and 1/2 weeks in the hospital.now im at home with severe spasms and high blood peressure (up to 22/14) whenever i move or change positions.my questin is: is it possibli to have an allergic reaction to baclofen while refilling (less then 10 seconds)the pump?cause it has to pass to the resevoir first.how much time does it take for the baclofen to reach my system after refilling to have an allergic reaction? cause i think he refilled it in the wrong hole, the one that goes to the catheter.
plz i need ur opinion cause drs. here never admit if they do anything wrong.
thanks in advance,
Rabih from Beirut Lebanon.

Rabih,
I wish I could help but these are some serious medical issues that need to be answered by medical professionals. I would definitely request a consult with a different Neurosurgeon. I saw you are from Lebanon and wanted to reach out to you and say hello. My fiance' was from Lebanon (Bahmadon?) but he died in a plane crash in 2006. His family name is Salibi. I hope you find the answers you are looking for and wish you a speedy recovery.

Rabih,
No thanks necessary. My fiance was a Neurologist and I know Neurontin is prescribed for neuropatic pain as well as other medicines specifically for neuropathic pain. Fentanyl and Dilaudid are really strong pain medicines but not formulated for neuropathic pain. I understood your issue to be the spasms which then caused the pain, is this correct? If you would not have spasms, would you be relatively pain free? If that is the case then Baclofen is the drug of choice for spasms but in certain cases it requires additional medicine to control them. I have severe spasms, although mostly due to UTI's, In addition to Baclofen 20mg 4 x's daily, I have to take Valium 10mg 4x's daily and xanax 1mg as needed if spasms are really bad. I am glad to hear you switched Drs but make sure they are independent of each other. I have thought about the pump because of the max dose I am on but I have heard too many problems with them to feel comfortable having one installed. Your question about the medicine reaction time from the pump I do not have the answer because I have not studied it enough to have that knowledge.
Finally, yes I am paralysed from the waist down. T8/9 Complete injury which happened in 7/2010.
What type of doctor are you dealing with? Neurosurgeon, Neurologist, etc..? Also, are you in Lebanon or here in USA? What quality of care are you able to receive?
If you would like to email me personally, please feel free to: kkillmer@consultant.com
I have many friends from Lebanon here that are physicians together we may be able to help you.
I will keep you in my prayers.
Shalom,
KK
