Thanks Clara, think that was where I realised how short the finish area was and my brakes weren't working!! Robbo thats great thanks I am planning on doing the ballot for the Great North next year, would love to try NY too, my running partner (who's able bodied wants to do it again before her 40th so hopefully that is on the cards too.

Most marathons aren't open to handbikes anyway. If you are after a racing chair I got mine on ebay they pop up every now and again, failing that contact your local athletic club, they should have a contact with a disability officer with England Athletics or UKA who will be able to lend you one to try out, if you like it then you can look into funding for a chair or buy a 2nd hand one like i did.

NY is a lottery to get in but i think foreign (Uk) and disabled competitors seem to get in first time. You need to apply early in year. BUt its defintely one of the best because the sites and sounds of NY are unforgettable. Lots of hills tho LOL!!
There is also a Disney Marathon which i think is popular with wheelies.
Have you had any coaching on pushing technique??
If the marathon is run under Athletics Rules etc then handbikes are usually outlawed. New York has a seperate handcycle class and are welcomed. Hans Christian Anderson Denamark marathon is a good one. Plus there are a load of european City Marathons.
Sorry this is heading off topic but if you need a handbike let me know i can usually source something. Also UK Handcycling have a selection of bikes people can buy and sometimes borrow.
