[Wheelchair Traveler]

Hey fellow wheelchair travelers! I am headed to the Abilities Expo this November in San Jose and want to create a collage of where wheelchair travelers have gone to. If anyone is willing to share a pic to encourage others to travel please email me.

I have been asked to be a bridesmaid in Vietnam. *deep breath. I'm a bit nervous and don't know how I will cope with the flight but I will do it

I haven't been in my chair long but I've had to go between Australia and the states. Here's a few photos (sorry if they're too big and there's so many!)



Fiance and I at the top of Lionshead mountain in Vail, Colorado (just up valley from my hometown) during the summer.

In the Singapore airport. (sidenote: they gave me this sticker to wear, I was slightly put off at first, but then realised it was because they thought I was in a wheelchair and a minor, so I got a laugh out of it.)





My fiance and I getting dropped off at the Perth, AUS airport. The limo was thanks to my insurance company, I was being sent back to the States for rehab (thus the crappy hired hospital chair)

All the next photos are around Perth. It was when I was finally out of ICU and out of the hospital but was waiting to be medivaced back to the US for rehab. I had a hired hospital chair and my fiance and I went around and did a bit of sightseeing of the town we'd been living in before we had to go.

Cottesloe Beach again! The beach had a bunch of boat/handicap ramps that were wide and level concrete that allow any sort of chair to go directly to the sand. My fiance picked me up and set me in the surf, it was wonderful!

(Also we wound up here because the insurance company let us choose a hotel in the area since our apartment wasn't accessible, while we waited for a flight to be sorted out. I wanted to just wake up and see the ocean. We went outside the city and found this amazing but simple hotel across a local two lane row from the beach. If you have a wider chair you may not fit the bathroom of some rooms, because of not knowing our schedule, we were put in 4 different rooms, it actually worked out well and we had a chance to find a bunch of different views. Some of the rooms have spa baths that I prefered, but the shower was roll in. Unfortunately the only entrance was through the back staff door and was also narrow. With a few minor improvements it could be very accessible and it was heaven for me. Probably because it was the first place I was at after the hospital where I thought I was going to die. The beach was also very uncrowded and gorgeous. If anyone would like to see more photos or get info let me know! I can send them to you or add you on FB or whatever works!)





Accessible (but a tight squeeze) restaurant at Cottesloe Beach. Best lychee daiquiri I have ever had. Best mixed drink I'd ever had. Great fresh oysters too and right across the street from the hotel above.





Not related to wheelchair travel per se but the gorgeous meal we had there... and my daiquiri!!

KayDub, I'm jealous of your overseas trips! I've only been to the USA and Canada. I'll probably never make it overseas but I can comfort myself knowing that there is still lots to see here in North America.

It depends on whether I'm traveling alone or not. If I happen to have a companion with me, I spring for a nice room. If I'm traveling alone, I will stay in Super 8's and occasionally sleep in the bed of my truck. Some of the better hotels have been the Pechanga resort in Temecula, CA, the Ventana Canyon resort in Tucson, AZ, Best Western Suites in Sedona, AZ and Glenwood Springs, CO, the Arlington in Hot Springs, AR, Comfort Inn Suites in Memphis, TN and Loew's Coronado Bay Resort, Coronado Beach, CA. I would recommend NOT camping out in the desert, where you may assume that because it's 117 degrees in the afternoon, you won't freeze your ass off at night. You do. It sucked. Bad.

This is a video, not a photo, but hope you enjoy it. It offers typical Taichung street scene, example of the way the Scooter Swarm behaves, and me. Seeing an elder out and about on a mobility scooter is not unusual here, though people with wheelchairs mounted usually have 3-wheeled, gas motor scooters or motorcycles. I fear modern thoroughfares are much the same everywhere.
