I am having a very tough time with a bowel mgmt program. I was 1 year post accident on July 1st. I am an ASIA A Complete T8/T9. I have been thinking about asking my Dr about having one done. I have a suprapube catheter and was wondering if it would be a big mistake having a colostomy bag. Anyone have any advice out there?

I just had mine done September 8th, It has changed my life for the better..no longer a prisoner in my own home.. I should have done it long ago. No more suffering.. I was in only 1 day for mine. Good luck.

KK as a New sci I was envious of the paraplegics being able to do their own bowel management daily or as needed.
Being a C4 C5 I hated being on a 3 time a week routine, having to take laxatives orally, then either a Fleet or magic Bullet that Both took hours longer then the time the paras were spending. And was leaving Me^ with the very angry mood after having movements in between bowel care days!

After talking to 2 of my para friends from back then, I asked my Doctor if I could try almost not taking any laxatives, just Drinking a Lot of water, and being in a manual chair staying as active as possible. Then just having an aide empty my lower bowel, wait 10 minutes after digital stimulation to see if anything moved down.
That was 27 years ago.

Keeping my stool on the firmer side near rock hard some days, has allowed Me^ to spend 15 to 30 minutes daily the most, just removing what's right there and waiting not much longer at all to be sure I was accident free the rest of the day!

It's been working for Me^ 27 years now, with Only an accessional accident about TWICE a YEAR !!! That's 10 times less often then I was !!!

Was the Greatest thing I've done that has made my bowel routine something everyone of the few Quads I've told while in the VA hospital for my yearly check up, say their going to try it.

Hoping you find what works Best for you !!

Have you tried the 'search' facility on the site. There is a lot of information and experiences, some good some not so good. We looked into it but after a lot of research my husband decided it wasn't for him at this present time.. But that could change in the future.

My advice, for what it's worth.

Take your time and make sure you explore all the alternatives.

KK

My accident was augest 09 but like I said I love it have to change or clean bag maybe once a day witch takes 15 min tops and change the whole wafer about 1 time a week. The only issue I have had ( I also have had other internal problems from my accident ) is if you have very watery stool then that sitting on the waffer if it does .. Will eventually leak through. Also you have that hole on the side of your body for me I'm self conscious so can't really sport no shirt :-/

Ha ha well just realized you are a femail so guess you don't have to worry about no shirt lol

My brother is 75 year old paraplegic with severed spinal cord. Could not get "clean" for a colonoscopy, having a barium enema tomorrow hopefully. Doctor has stated he is NOT a canidate for colostomy but did not explain why.
Has a stage 4 sacrum bed sore and chances of healing without this colostomy is slim. Any ideas as to why he could not have one. Advice? Thanks.

I'm a T4-5 incomplete I also have been considering a colostomy. My concern is that I have a supra public catheter and I am worried about cross contamination of the sp stoma from a leaking colostomy bag. Does anyone have both a colostomy and a sp tube? Have you had any problems with colostomy leakage? What about a "blow out"? I am quite skinny and the two holes would only be about three inches apart. I also have a feeding tube(g-tube) which would be fairly close to any colostomy site.

Thanks

Just make sure you go to a good doctor that doesn't f*@k everything up and leave you with only 3 feet of intestine and almost kill you :censored:
