This might be a little strange... I'm really really good at weight shifting and moving when I can to avoid pressure sores, even as I've lost more function recently. I make sure to check my feet and bum when I can to see if I have signs of a pressure sore. But today I was in the tub scrubbing soap where soap needs scrubbed (arm pits, crotch) and felt a GIGANTIC ingrown hair along my bikini line, not the front part but the inside part at the far end of where your hair goes. I usually shave, not completely, but everything on the bikini line so I'm almost sure that's what this is (I use a kind of dull razor). I used to catch them earlier because they were so painful. I've been having feverish bouts and sharp headaches the last day or so that feel like AD but I couldn't find anything wrong and thought it might just be stress or problems with my virus flaring up a bit.
Should I be worried this might turn into a pressure sore? It's along the part of my bikini line that's closest to my bum so I'm applying pressure directly on it when I sit not counting the pressure that it has from the inseam of my jeans (it's supposed to snow a foot tomorrow here, no more light shorts or dresses or light comfy clothes here :-() If I just take care of it should I be fine? I've had UTIs and AD problems but never a pressure sore so I'm not familiar with the protocol. Has anyone had an ingrown hair (anywhere on their body) jump start a pressure sore?
Thanks everyone. I just know I'll get better advice from you guys than my mum (her response: Ohmygod! KAILE. How do you know it's an ingrown hair?? And not... :under her breath: A sexual infection... me: *face palm* Besides the fact I've had them before and know what they look like I do not have an ST... just never mind.)

Hi KayDeb,
Whenever I have an ingrown hair, I take a pair of tweezers and just pull it out, unraveling as it goes. I put anti-bacterial cream on it to prevent infection.
Good luck.

Thanks Millard! Usually I do that, I get them a lot on my legs. This one I was just unable to feel or see until it got really bad. It was just in one of those "blind spots" so to speak. Luckily I ended up going on a short round of antibiotics for a different skin infection (abscess on my arm) so with some cleaning and keeping an eye on it (via a mirror) prevented anything from happening. I was just wondering if anyone had ever had problems with it. No harm, no foul. (And I promise! I'm not trying to make an awful pun with your user name :-p)

Hey Kay Dub,
This is most definitely something to be wary of; an ex of mine had one AB'd and it got pretty nasty and he never shaved down below. Exfoliate and if you need to, contortionist style, tweezer the little blighter out is the only advice I can give; oh yes! no more blunt razors. With him the infection tracked really quickly and he ended up in hospital so prevention is better than cure but one thing that puts me off laser hair removal of my bikini line is the risk of ingrowing hairs due to the potential danger. Hair removal creams are good.

In addition to the above, you shouldn't be tempted to shave the skin on weight bearing areas.
When you shave, the hair is cut just above the skin, and as it grows, it loses the ability to flex when weight is put on it. This results in the hair being pushed back into itself, and can cause irritation to the hair's follicle.
Shaving also can cause ingrowing hairs, this is a condition where the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle (folliculitis) or “razor bumps” (pseudofolliculitis barbae), which vary in size. While ingrown hair most commonly appears in areas where the skin is shaved or waxed (beard, legs, pubic region), it can appear anywhere.“
Over time, this irritation can eventually cause an infection to the base of the hair, which can develop into a cyst, and ultimately, a breakdown in skin.
