I'm a c4/5 quad and I'm 22 years post injury. The problem is that I take 10mg oxybutynin once a day. Ive started having really bad spasm's when im in bed or lying flat. What is the max amount of oxybutynin you can take in one day. Also what are the alternatives to taking oxybutynin ie. alternative meds. I thought id try here before aproaching the docs.

Hi, sorry to hear that you're suffering with bladder spasms, they can be so horrible. The maximum dose of Oxybutynin is 20mg (5mg 4 times a day). However, in my experience the body can become used to these types of drugs if you've been taking them for while, so it might be time for a change. There are a few other anti-muscarinics you could try, such as Detrusitol, Vesicare (solifenacin) and fesoteridine (there are others but I can't remember them off the top of my head). I had good success with Vesicare for about 18 months, with no horrible side effects, but accordingly to my urologist, there isn't an exact science with who gets on with them and who doesn't, so it's often a case of trial and error. If you don't get any relief from medication, the next line of treatment is Botox injections into the bladder, which i'm told has about a 70% success rate (i'll be having this at some point as i'm now in a position where the meds aren't working any more). Talk to your GP or urologist about trying something else, see how it goes.

Hope this helps!

You can take more Oxybutynin than that.

I was on 2 x 10mg off Oxybutynin Hydrochloride M/R once a day for the last 2 years but recent spasms and nippy pains had my Spinal Consultant increase this to 3 x 10 mg.

Note that I'm taking the M/R - modified release drug so I take it in one dose as it's slow release anyway.

This has got my bladder back under control within a week.

Good Luck,

EC
