When I am able to get back on the boat I will be sleeping on the settee that is made into a bunk. The cushions are 4" rubber foam covered in naugahyde, new and firm, but I think I should still sleep on a mattress topper. Does anyone use one or have any suggestions?

First, what do you sleep on at home? I try to use as few additives as possible. MAYBE take a topper with you but try it first without it. Keep a close check on pressure points. You may need to turn alittle more often if you don't use it. Use common sense and a close watch!

I'm not exactly sure what kind of topper you're referring to but it wouldn't hurt to be alittle over cautious to begin with. Everyone's skin is alittle different so you'd be the best judge.

Are you on the boat for 1 night or many nights? Add up all the factors involved and decide from that. My rehab training taught me to condition my skin to be able to travel without taking everything including the kitchen sink.

Remember the key word is COMMON SENSE.

Mattress toppers are good for certain people. the one thing that you need to consider heavily is you get what you pay for. I have had simple egg crate style foam pads and those really don't work. you can pick those up at walmart for maybe $20. The mattress pad i have now i love. I spent $400 on it. It is 4 inch memory foam. but i got that becuase my actual mattress is about 25 years old. play around with it. see what it is like with out it. if you need something try buying 1 or 2 cheap ones. and if they help but not entirely get a good one.

I have a 4" memory foam top on my bed at home. It's perfect, provides the necessary padding for sleeping but does not swallow you up when trying to move or dress.
I agree with Goose, make a judgement on the mattress in the boat as the memory foam topper can be expensive. On the other hand what price maintaining good skin!

So I've been very fortunate w/skin sores, or lack thereof, so if I try a particular pad and it's not working do I watch for my pressure sensitive areas to turn red? I thought too that I would turn more often, right now I turn once throughout the night.
Thank you everyone for your responses. I'm sure so much of this is redundant for you "old timers" but your steady contributions help SO much. Thanks again.

Yes, the first sign of a red spot is a potential problem and needs prompt attention. Goose always has great advice. You will always want to check your skin once you're injured, as I'm sure you have been educated on.

Memory foam is terrific and well worth the investment! I would say you might want to make the investment if you are able. Especially being out on the boat for awhile.
