Alessandro Zanardi, the hot Italian former Formula 1 driver, took first place in the hand cycle division of the NYC Marathon. Perhaps only the motor sports junkies on here know of him. Zanardi is known as Alex to Yankees because he got so annoyed when he drove in the US at people who would not learn his name he simply changed it for our media. He was in a horrific crash in 2001, due to which he lost both feet and ankles. As might be expected he is fiercely competitive. The field had 48 entrants, only one very close in time.

The Wheel Chair division had 93 entrants.

Incidentally, Zanardi had history with BMW. In 2005 BMW built a a racer with hand controls specifically for him for the World Touring Car Championship.

This guy is not SCI, he is an amputee. He is kin in that his loss was the result of a vicious auto wreck.
