There has been a lot of publicity over the last few years about budget airlines and their lack if empathy for disabled people.
I flew back from Germany last weekend and after the hassel my friends have had with easyjet decided to make my life easy and fly british airways. I booked the flight online and then had to phone them up to tell them about my manual wheelchair. I turned up at the airport really early and went to check in my bag and me. I went up to the desk and was told that i had to check my chair in there and then (3 hours before flight) I told the lady that i go in my chair to the plane door and then my chair goes in the hold. She came up with lots of reasons why i should use an airport chair and in the end went and got her manager who went over the thing again telling me that they werent insured to carry my chair down the steps of the gangway to the hold. Then it wouldnt fir through the door as it was a little door (the woman was fatter than my chair so i was sure if she fitted through the chair would)
I didnt budge and in the end they said they would put me on and if the chair didnt fit they wouldnt put it on so i would end up in heathrow without a chair which i said was unacceptable. In the end they put me on standby and said they would get me off if my chair didnt fit.
At which point the woman took my 23kg bag off my lap and lifted it onto the converyer belt (but couldnt lift my 6kg chair!)
At boarding the chair fitted without an issue and arrived back in the uk but it was a whole lot of hassel that i didnt need. I flew BA because they have a good reputation but this has shattered my illusions
