Are you in the UK or USA?
ALWAYS REMEMBER - The darkest hour is only 60 minutes long and what won't kill you will make you stronger.

cauda equina lesion resulting in lack of ability to walk. Spinal cord undamaged and intact. NOW ABLE TO HOBBLE AROUND ON 2 STICKS AFTER LOADS OF PHYSIO.

Hi Irene

I'm not sure what you mean by criteria, do you mean how much help the person needs or how much money they have?

I don't have any help with my husband(my choice) however last year we did get assessed by the Social Services , I was not keen but any way...So this "nice lady" came and asked us about what I did for my husband and what he could do for himself. We made it clear that the reason we asked for the assessment was in case of an emergency , me having an accident or being ill.

Well the result was that we would be entitled to 3 hours per day..2 hours in the morning to get my husband up and 1 in the evening to put him to bed, this we would have to pay for cos were not on benefit, well the right ones anyway!.So I asked about over night and she said as my husband is C5/6 they don't consider he needs more hours than the 3.She said not to have a crisis at the weekend as they couldn't gaurantee cover..so I asked what they would do in an emergency with no staff and she said the person may have to "go in somewhere" for there safety! So even if we were on a means tested benefit the SS would not pay for a live in Pa.

If I go away from home for any reason we use a care agency , theres one that advertises in the S.I.A and then I have peace of mind. The last trip I took alone the cover for my husband cost more than the holiday.

Hi Lorna/Irenec

When I first had my accident, SS (what an apt name for them) came out to see my wife.
They said because she was working, that we were entitled to help with my care.

I would look in to getting a small job ( few hours a week maybe) this may give you the scoop for care.

If this fails - start on your local MP, get his support, you will be surprised at how fast SS will be to respond to your needs.

One thing I have learnt since my accident, you get nothing without a fight with the system.
Those that shout the loudest and all that..

Cheers

Billie
