Sometimes when I catheterize there is a little bit of blood on the tip. How do I avoid this?

yes leah gave good advice you hve to be really careful with insertion and withdrawal if too much friction its no good, also what size do you use? if you done trauma to the urethra then you have to take extra care for a few days to heal

Your profile doesn't indicate if you're male or female, so I'll assume you're a male. Usually if your bladder is spasming, you may have a hard time getting the catheter through the sphincter muscle. If you push hard, you're probably going to get a little bit of blood in the catheter tip. If resistance occurs, just hold the catheter with mild pressure against the sphincter for about 20-30 seconds. The spincter muscle will tire quickly and the catheter will slide right in. (I had to do this last night.) If you continue bleeding, you should consult your urologist.

Good luck.
