The topic was, is a .223 a suitible round for whitetailed deer. Personally, I don't think it is, bigger guns kill cleaner and quicker, and I stated that. Some dude makes the claim that "shot placement is all that matters, ask a bow hunter". Horseshit I say, no deer drops dead in it's tracks after being shot with an arrow (no, I don't have anything against bow hunting, it was just a lame agument). I think I'm more iritated that I let myself get dragged into an online argument, lol.... Anyhoo, .22 caliber bullets for deer, under any given conditions, ya or nay?

Yes, one must develop the muscle for clicking away from a page...

Your own click-away brain path is getting stronger, Tim, it just doesn't happen all at once. Sorry that zinger slid in to your emotional innards.

nay. I used a .22 for birds (pheasant and quail). It's unethical in my opinion to deer hunt with a .22. Yes, it can be done, but the chances of just injuring the deer causing it to die slowly is at a higher risk. Some states it is actually illegal to hunt with a .22. As far as bow hunting goes, I believe that yes, even though "practice makes perfect" you should practice on targets, due to the fact that you can cause a deer to go through unnecessary suffering if you don't know what your doing.

Rebel Suiter is a complete dumbass. Why must we suffer fools?

I know of a couple people who say a .223 is big enough, but I can't go that small. I know its not a lot larger, but I'm going to get a .243. And as for spine shots, I hate to see those. Its one thing when its an accidental high shot, but to purposely use it as a quick drop method is not in my book of ethical hunting. I would go bigger, but I'm dealing with recoil problems and the cost of buying a decent rifle.

I think the consensus among ethical hunters is that any .22 caliber is not a good choice. Bullets that small don't hold together very well on impact and may not penetrate to vital organs. .243 is a good minimum for its milder recoil and better retained weight with penetration. I never liked being behind anything bigger than a 30-06 and it has gotten to where even lifting my M-1 to my shoulder is uncomfortable. Anytime you offer an opinion on an open forum you invite assholes everywhere to pull your chain. The one that pulled yours probably would try an elk at 600 yards with a .17 HRM. After all, shot placement is everything!!!!!!
