I have a spare pair of 24" and 26" wheels and want to put some knobby tires on one of them so I can get across gravel and snow this winter. I was wondering if anyone knew the best place to get tires that will fit the 26" rim and if I should use those rims or the 24" ones on my chair that was just built to spec 26" wheels. I took the 26" wheels to my local bike shop and all they did was call three days later to tell me they couldnt put tires on them and then returned them to me missing the tube and scratched up from where they took the tire off. I am burning mad at them for not only scratching up my brand new wheels but also taking my tube so that I have to now buy a new one. I am also aware that the knobbys will throw off the alignment if I use the 26's but I don't know if I can find 2" thick knobby tires for the 24's. It's all so complicated!

That must not have been a very good bike shop..
BMX riders use 24" wheels so any decent bike shop should be able to help.
Maxis make a tyre called 'Holy Roller' (1.8" and 2.4") which is designed for street so while having knobs, it still rolls fast over cement. Also means they do not have larger knobs on the outside of the tyre (like a mountain bike tyre) which can dig into your wrist while pushing.

Tyre width.
I found the 2.4" to wide but that we'd pushing on the push rims. On snow I'm guessing you will be pushing on the wheels so the wider the better.

As for tyre size. The 26er's are already pretty big for a chair and knobbys will add an extra inch so I'd use the 24's which will become 26.

24inch wheelchir rims and 24inch bmx rims aren't generally the same size (oddly 24inch bmx tyres seem to fit a 22inch wheelchair rim) 25 inch wheelchair rims are the same as 26inch mtb tyres but that doesn't help the OP - for the full lowdown read here http://sheldonbrown....ire-sizing.html

to the OP - best bet would be to sell the 26 inch wheels and get some 25inch and mount standard mtb tyres on them, this will end up with wheels almost the exact same size. If you really want to use the 24" whels your options are limited but do exsit.


True wide knobblies for a 24inch wheelchair rim are actally pretty difficult to come by but can be had from some wheelchair specialists and sportaid comes to mind as does mobility scotland who know their stuff re wheels and tyres.

Thanks for the info you guys. I think we're gonna temporarily put whatever tires on the rims that we can and look at getting some different ones when I get back from this trip.
