I want to build a conversation board for a 25 year old man (friend) who was shot two weeks ago and is completely paraplegic, on breathing support and has been advised not to attempt to speak too much.

So far, pictures have been used to identify people, and he can wink at letters when recited, but i read about boards and want to make one.

My questions: Should i do it on a poster board type of thing from a supply shop? My writing is terrible but i am guessing i can buy letters there too.

What should i include?
I am thinking pics of family/friends,
the frequent phrases i though of include: hungry/thursty/tired/f*@koff/when
other suggestions? colours?

Thiis is so brand new and i welcome ANY Suggestions for this.

Greetings mellybelly,
a conversation board is a great thing to help communication when u are unable to talk, there is nothing more frustrating then being misunderstood. i found personally that using a laser pointer in my mouth was by far the best way to point to the letters/phrases. think of the most commonly used words like yes, no, thirsty, hungry, go away, uncomfortable, shut up, and have them on one board then have the alphabet/numbers/symbols on another board.
Good luck

If they're on a vent, the laser might not work well in his mouth. I was thinking about a headband around the forehead with a laser attached to that. Depends on how much head movement he has. I'm sure someone has already designed one....the trick is to find it. I'll give it more thought.
