I hit of I a foul ball Amy and I decided to get into the Christmas spirit by going to a local concert at the accessible Maui Arts and Cultural Center www.mauiarts.org in Kahului. All sorts of acts played this entertainment center from alternate film showings, Hawaiian music and hula popular bands like Chris Isaac and in the larger outdoor seating bands like Aerosmith the Eagles and Elton John have played here. As I get older going out at night is more of challenge so Sunday afternoon at 330 show with the Maui Pops Orchestra and the local Hawaiian singer sounds like a good reason to explore this facility problem is with the 330 on a Sunday afternoon show is it brings out all the other white hairs with disabled parking placard who don't mind coming to a show in our advance. So needless to say we get there all the handicap parking spots are gone and they forgot to open up the other parking lot. Amy and I become flustered and want to get out of this traffic mayhem so we scooted to a nearby park Amy cut through cross country to get to the facility and I had a go kart around via sidewalk and bike path. It wasn't that bad but would have been a bitch in case of rain. Once I got there and Amy had got the tickets, everything calmed down but it still irks me that I cant get a parking spot. The show was in Castle theater which is a proper community sized theater with good acoustics. This accessibility is very nice easy walkways to the theater and large open concreted areas outside the doors. Upon giving the door person our tickets a nice lady offered to take us to our seats. The seats are on the outside ring. They have moved and flattened a seating area and I was able to sit next to Amy comfortably. The Symphony and the local artists was good although the flow of the show was disjointed as too much MC chatter. After the show another nice lady came and offered to show me aside exit which we took and avoided all the crowds leaving the show. All in all it was a good afternoon adventure but do realize I am becoming more and more reclusive and avoiding crowds. Aloha Bruce

Check with the DMV there in Hawaii to be sure but at least here in California if you do not find an available disabled parking spot you ARE permitted to park diagonally across 2 regular spots to accommodate your wheelchair (you just pull in over the line so that YOUR side is towards the road so you can fully open the door etc.).

*Wheelchairs are made of a special ocular magnetic alloy......they're "eyeball magnets".*

Yes but be sure to have COPIES of that rule IN WRITING + your paperwork that goes with your parking placard/plates. I make SEVERAL copies of my originals; I then take ONE & black out almost all the info such as address ONLY my name & D.O.B. (people have such a hard time believe that a YOUNG person was really given disabled parking privileges)& the city/state....this way if someone is a bit on the irate side for what ever reason I/we don't need to worry about them showing up at our house to "settle" the disagreement), I have another that has the #s of WHICH block I live on & which unit OUR mobile home IS blackened out/hid but does show the name of the street, & then of course I have 1 with ALL the info so that anyone SEMI-official such as mall security type people trying to see "What's up?".
You are ALWAYS supposed to carry the original paperwork from the DMV & present it upon request by any POLICE OFFICER!
