Does anybody know any grants or organizations that are helping out people in
wheelchairs get a car. I need a car to be more independent especially if i
want to start school in the fall. If anybody can help me out that'd be great!

Two things I have experienced you might check into. Most auto manufacturers allow a certain amount of grant for making their cars more accessible. This is usually a flat amount and only available with purchase of new vehicles. It usually will not completely cover major conversions. The other things is, some states will have a more generous grant for adaptation of vehicles for their handicapped citizens. Louisiana has a "Traumatic Head and Spinal Cord Injury Grant" that is funded from DUI funds and has been a god send for me in the past few years. It even helps with home adaptations. Check out your own state health department to see if they have something similar. Best wishes...JD

Most states will have several dealers that adapt and sell handicapped vehicles. I would suggest you try a google search for "handicapped vehicles" in your state. Then start researching those near you for a used one. U might check out other sources like Craig's List also.....These dealers might also know of grants to cover the cost since they are in the business.

What State are you in? I live in NY and although they don't offer grants to purchase vehicles, there is a program called Access VR and they are currently equiping a van for me with a lowered floor, ramp and high tech hand controls so I can get back to work. I had to buy the van but they are paying for the rest, which totals $80,000. They will help anyone that is going to school or working. I'm sure you probably only need mechanical hand controls which aren't too expensive, but every little bit helps.
Good luck
