My doctor has me taking Nitrofurantoin Macro 50mg a day in the morning. Which he told me is preventitive medicine for urinary tract infections. My worry is that my body will some day adjust to taking this antiobiotic and maybe end up doing more damage than good. This is the second antiobiotic in the last 3 years I've been on. The first one my body did become immune to it and now he has me on this one. Any thoughts to taking a preventitive antibiotic's for UTI's?

I have taken trimithroprim (?) For decades and it appears to work and I have had no resistance issues.

I also take 50mg of nitrofurantoin a day as a preventitive measure, and have been for awhile. The alternative to this is that i was getting a uti every couple of months and getting full dose antibiotics to treat it, as well as how crappy a uti makes you feel.

I've been taking 100mg doxycycline twice a day as a preventative for MRSA infections for a little over a year. So far it has worked great. They also put me on stronger antibiotics before surgery that I had in October, and again, it worked very well. I think I have to agree that I'd rather go ahead and take the meds with the chance of building immunity than having another MRSA infection.

I've been taking 1 gram of Hiprex twice a day since I left rehab over a year ago. I've only had one UTi since then and I'm pretty certain it was a result of me camping for four days and not being able to stay as clean down there as usual. I've had plenty of high-volume voids that should have caused a UTI (especially on nights when I'm at the bar) but have been pretty lucky with avoiding the UTI's. I'm thinking that the preventative Hiprex is helping ward off any infections. The downside? It's an acidic pill that I have to take at breakfast and dinner -- so I need to avoid any foods or liquids with higher acidic levels as they will hurt my stomach when combined with the medication. (no orange juice in the morning is sacrilege!)

It's been nitrofuantin, for me. Now I don't say that I don't have any baceria,, up in there,,, but the ones I have are well controlled with the drug I take,, so I'm satisfied.

By the way,,,, WE don't become immune to an antibiotic,,,, the bacteria may,, because some of those little buggers mutate ( evolve ) and their new offspring might have a higher tolerance. That's how MRSA came to be. And that is ALWAYS the danger.

I was on the same regiment for over a year. My GP and I decided to drop it when my insurance ended (that stuff is pricy). That was over a year ago and I haven't had any issues. I reuse my caths, but I boil them in the microwave for 10 minutes between uses. My labs always show some bacteria, but other than occasional cloudiness, no symptoms of a UTI. Of course, if you're not using intermittent caths you may be at a higher risk (from what I've been told).

I've always been wary of being on long term antibiotics, but i've had a UTI that's been a bugger to shift for over a month now - been on clarithromycin, co-amoxiclav, trimethoprim and nitrofurantoin (which is what i'm taking now). I'm going in for major surgery in 6 weeks time that i've been waiting about a year for, and it's taken a LOT of planning involving 3 specialists, so i'm really worried about this UTI recurring, meaning the surgery would have to be cancelled. I would be absolutely gutted if this happened, so i'm considering going on prophylaxis to minimise the risk, if only on the run up to surgery. I've heard that it's a good idea to rotate prophylactic antibiotics, to prevent the bugs becoming immune, but I can see a few of you have been on a single antibiotic for years without any problems. I guess it depends on the person and on the particular bug(s).

I take the same, 50mg Nitrofurantoin at night, been a couple of years now and I've still had 3 UTi's one of which put me in hospital fro 6 days on IV antibiotics as it had made it up into my kidneys.

I took trimethrprim for about 4 mths during which time did get one uti but not major. Switched to nitrofurantoin & on that now, 50mg/night. Dr mentioned can later switch to 3rd one (sorry, can't recall name atm) & rotate between them. Im relatively new to bladder probs so not really sure about long term aspect.

I don't take any medication at all to prevent uti's. I use Microcyn injected into my bladder three times a week and it has been 1.5 years since I had a uti.

Good luck.
